I think you folks are blaming the editing for the fact that this cast makes me yearn for last seasons (and no, that is not a compliment to last seasons)...I guess the advent of the youtube era has really sucked any humanness out of most of these people. You can't edit these folks because there's not much of interest. VAPID VAPID VAPID. I actually hate myself for watching. Say what you want about Jersey Shore, at least they are interesting (or were interesting before becoming a hit). I know why Brandon wrote what he did in his diary now, if I was stuck on a private island with these folks, I'd resort to drowning myself too, which reminds me, he didn't seem to even pop up in this episode, anyone call a medic?
Long post incoming guys.
Alright fellas just listened to another After Buzz recap show for this episode and it was interesting.
For the first two episodes, Adam Royer from Vegas has been a co-host. He has been BLASTING this season. Saying Trey is a tool, all the girls are ugly, Brandon is a loser, etc. I thought he was being pretty harsh. Trey called in this week to address Adam but Adam wasn't there.
Trey was not happy with how Adam was talking about the show. He came on though to clear some things up. Many fans have been saying that they love the cast yet the ratings are in the dump and many people don't like the direction of the episodes. I myself have really enjoyed the cast myself and unlike many others I have though the episodes have been decent although there is nothing to write home about.
Trey says that he can't help how Bunim and Murray have edited the show. He says that we as viewers have to understand that things are edited to give us stories and yes, he and Laura did spend a lot of time together but BMP have edited it to look like the whole show is a huge love fest. Laura wasn't all over him nearly as much as the show makes it seem which is 24/7. Trey says that he has had so much time with Swift, Brandon, LaToya and Rob but production has refused to show it for whatever reason.
It upsets him how they are putting it together becasue so much more went on that the viewers aren't able to see. There is a lot of good story that he feels is being neglected in favor of all the showmance stuff. He said Swift got no air time last week and he did so many things that aren't being shown.
All in all he sounded frustrated with how the house is being represented. He also made another good point about how difficult it was to live on that island. The fact that they have to take a boat out to anything was an big inconvenience. If there wasn't a driver available you had to wait or you were screwed. To go out late, you don't always feel like getting in a boat and boating back when you come home. You might not want to get wet, you might not feel up to getting in rolling water, you might not want to take the time it takes to make the trip.
He said before people like Adam rip into the cast or show, they need to consider what it's like to be there. Yes, Adam was on Real World but he wasn't on St. Thomas. He doesn't know the people or the conditions. He also didn't appreciate Adam alluding to the fact that Nany was way hotter than Laura. He says he has seen them both and they are very comparable, I thought that bit was kind of funny.
Gathering from what Trey said, to what some fans have said and what even the co-host of the afterbuzz show has said. I really feel like BMP dropped the ball with how they put this season together. I think they casted well but what they are choosing to show and the overall format of the show is really not lighting any fires.
I think it is high time they went back to the drawing board and tried to come out with something fresh. The franchise still seems viable but at it's current state, I'm not so sure. They need to think of a way to freshen the franchise up and produce a slicker, more varied final product. They constantly try to spice up challenges, why not this as well?

This could be said for every season!!! I know everyone has been hating on the San Diego season, but from what I heard from Zach, a lot more went on that house than what BM decided to show us!!! A lot more interesting and fun stuff than Frank and his hook ups!
Yep. As I said, I am really starting to feel like BMP is dropping the ball a bit with these seasons. We usually jump to blame the cast but the artist behind the work could use some blame themselves. Maybe they are losing touch with what the audience wants to see. Maybe their style has just gotten stale.
Two editing things I have noticed--no other program I watch on TV appears as poorly colored as this season (meaning the scenes outside at night appear just super orange/red on my TV when no other show is like that) and the scenes are too long--if nothing is really being said, those scenes need to chopped to run faster and have more of them. I figured the island was a bad idea unless you had outdoors people who went exploring a lot on it.
You want poorly edited? How about Laura talking to Robb/Marie outside, then going to a shot of Laura with Trey in his bed and she's wearing completely different clothes and has her hair down when it was up before.

The way the editing has been the last couple of seasons, it seems like BMP let their interns or bunch of amateurs do the editing the last couple of seasons!!
The way the editing has been the last couple of seasons, it seems like BMP let their interns or bunch of amateurs do the editing the last couple of seasons!!
It would seem those interns also were put in charge of Casting since Season 23.
I just finished watching the second episode.Whoever is in charge of casting decisions for Real World should be fired because the people they keep picking are just not entertaining at all to watch, We've seen this same story 23840238502 times. This is basically a season we've already seen with different names and hair colors.
The whole private island thing was a stupid idea IMO, because they don't get to experience the customs of whichever city they were put in if its some private island that only they live on..? and they have to take a boat whenever they want to go ANYWHERE? lame, I just think BMP needs to fire a lot of people in charge of casting/filming this, we need some FRESH ideas. or SOMETHING.

Exactly! What made the Vegas season good was the whole story line about Dustin! If it wasn't for him the whole vegas season would have been a bust! We need more story lines like that. Not the same old girl falling in love with a guy story line! You would think BMP would have the talent and resources to find some one with a unique back ground and story line like Dustin to be casted for every season!!

I mean, I see what Trey is saying but I kind of feel like people always resort to "it's the editing!" whenever the ratings for their season are bad or when people are constantly complaining about how boring the cast is.
Maybe he's right (the editing does seem kind of bad this season) but they also can only edit what you give them so...

I think the past few years BMP has this mindset that the only thing appealing to viewers about the Real World is arguments and inter-house hookups and relationships, and yes while those things are attention grabbers for reality programming they've taken away so much of what the show fundamentally is about by doing that. I HIGHLY suggests that the powers that be (especially the editors) take a look at every season produced from 1999-2004 and take LOTS and LOTS of notes.
Well, I know I've said this but I do like this cast. Has anything particularly new or interesting happened? Not really but at the same time, like with any TV show or movie, there is a certain formula. It's like romantic comedies. They're all pretty much the same movie with different actors and scenarios. TRW has a formula, and after 20 years and 27 seasons, it's going to repeat itself.
To be honest, I've come to realize that I have to lower my standards and expectations for RW seasons. It just simply isn't the same show it was 10 years ago, and hasn't been for a long time.
I'm really easy. I don't need it to be too dramatic or too interesting. That helps, obviously, but hey at least the cast is likeable. The reason I already like it better than last season is because while that was also pretty boring, it had Frank who was insufferable. Not entertaining, just god-awful. You wanna talk about being repetitive, how bout the first 3 episodes of last season where Frank got into a drunken outrage over who knows what, or the last 3 episodes which were literally 3 episodes of Frank begging Zach and Ashley to hang out with the rest of the group. Just thinking about it gives me a headache.

Kevin, I've produced, directed and edited enough TV over the years to know amateur editing when I see it. Today's RW is nothing as it was.
I'm the last person to resort to "it's the editing, but I will call it as I see it. To me, "editing" is shorthand for the full process involving logging the video and transcribing the audio so it can be intelligently archived and retrieved; creatively building a storyline as close to actual events as possible; and, only then beginning to pull together coherent video and audio that tells a compelling story. Then the real mastery of video editing begins with careful attention paid to matters of continuity -- ensuring that OTF (on-the0.fly) or ITM (in-the-moment) interviews have people wearing the same clothing as in the main action scenes, ensuring drop-in audio matches in volume and quality (equally robust sound adjusted between microphone types), all the while building the story line to its classical points of tension and release.
Good luck finding anything like that in recent seasons of TRW. Are they capable of doing it? ****, yes. Look at "Project Runway" and "Keeping up with the Kardashians." Love or hate those shows, it's clear to me that BMP uses better technicians/artists on them than they do on Real World. Either this is the worst cast ever made to look average, or it is a decent cast given absolutely no help by production. Jim Johnston has been a good producer for a long time. A product like this season appears to be thus far must disappoint him greatly.

Oh wow, I didn't know you've produced and directed. Lol, I feel like an idiot because you would obviously know about this.
I actually feel bad too because after reading the OPs comment I watched the After Buzz episode and Trey was just trying to defend their season against all the BS people are saying about them, basically explaining it's not their fault, they DID do fun things and there are lots of crazy things that happened but he said for some reason they're not showing it.
Maybe BMP have given up? Because if it's not the cast which I'm really starting to think it's not them, then that makes me think they have a plan or they don't really care about RW anymore. Which is kind of sad because RW IS a good show, there's a reason its the longest running reality show in TV history.
I haven't been watching since season 1 like some here, but for what I have watched it seems like BMP only really cares about the seasons in which their contract will or won't be renewed. I wouldn't mind them cancelling it for awhile as somebody here suggested recently. Maybe then they will take it serious enough to fight to bring it back better.
The key difference between San Diego and St. Thomas is that before the show started, we didn't have molds tell us how much production hated a good chunk of the cast and that absolutely nothing happened on the show. This time around, we haven't really had that as far as I can remember so it is possible that the editing is bad.
That said, I also do agree that some people think they're cooler than they actually are and think their stuff is better. San Diego is a great example of that (I don't know anyone who actually found that crab circle **** to be funny at all). But we're only three episodes into this season so who knows what else could happen?
Though I have to admit, these last two seasons are reminding me why I never watched Real World in the first place. I just don't see the point really, it's pretty pointless to me. I got back into The Challenge around Cutthroat but even before then, I didn't religiously watch Real World and pretty much just watched reruns of it if nothing was on. I watched Las Vegas 2 because I was really excited for Rivals and wanted to see the new people who were on it and actually enjoyed that season due to how different it was. But it looks to me like if there isn't some big crazy storyline that's really captivating, the show is just generic drama with no substance.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllll...
I just watched this episode for the first time. The thing I absolutly hate about this season, so far, is the lack of internal drama. the "ohh Trey hates how clingy Laura gets" stuff is cute, but hearing two people go at it Jenn and Stephen, Ayiiia and CJ, or Bre and Kim style is what I watch RW for; not the little 2 second fights and 3 second clips of them ******* under covers.
Also, is it just me or does it seem like Swift is acting a little? Like a front..

If production doesn't like the cast, will that affect their editing?

The crew that had to be with the cast in St Thomas 24/7 is not the crew that edits the show. The editors are back in Van Nuys, CA. Different people. Different circumstances.
Hopefully this ep is good for real, gives me and my guys something good to talk about in our video. I wonder if Brandon is gonna man up and start girl hunting again.
They haven't re-aired this episode at all!
I have seen NO previews for this week's episode!
Honestly, if I miss Wednesday's episode (second in a row) because of the Viacom/Directv kerfuffle, I am going to call it a season and I have a feeling I won't be the only one. The 20% of viewers that can't even view the show online are probably going to go away for good...
They also aren't even showing any previews for the upcoming episode.
All I've been seeing are non-stop commercials for Teen Wolf, Teen Mom, Wake Brothers and Snooki & JWoww. I guess they've officially given up on this season.

But this is supposed to be the best episode of the season--Bacchus' girl get jealous of him making flirty faces with the blowfish, they have a big fight, and later she makes him a "tuna" sandwich as a peace offering :)
