The Real World Renewed For Two More Seasons
via press release:
MTV PICKS UP TWO MORE SEASONS OF HIT REALITY SERIES “THE REAL WORLD” “The Real World: Las Vegas” Is TV’s #1 Show in its Time Period – Wednesdays at 10pm et/pt New York, NY (March 23, 2011) – MTV announced today that it has picked up seasons 27 and 28 of the hit reality series, “The Real World.” Currently airing its 25th season, and in casting for its 26th season, “The Real World” is widely credited for launching the modern reality television genre and is to date the longest-running reality series in history. Each season, the show brings young adults together to live in a new city while cameras document their every move 24-7. Debuting in 1992 in New York City the show has since taken its cameras to some of the hottest cities around the world, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Paris, Sydney, and Cancun. The current season of “The Real World” is set in Las Vegas and has ranked #1 with P12-34 in its time period across all of television since returning on March 9. Last week’s episode averaged a 2.3 rating (P12-34) and 2.2 million total viewers, growing +28% from the prior week’s season premiere. “For the past 25 seasons, ‘The Real World’ has connected with our audience and continues to provoke discussion about issues that matter to our viewers,” said Chris Linn, EVP of Programming, MTV Series. “We are excited to continue our relationship with Bunim/Murray Productions and look forward to more dynamic programming and continued success.” “The Real World has remained relevant for 25 seasons because it continues to capture the lives of young adults, hold a mirror to the challenges they face, and truly reflect the current generation. We thank MTV for their ongoing commitment to this show, and we’re excited to see where the two additional seasons take us,” said Jonathan Murray, Executive Producer of “The Real World” and Chairman of Bunim/Murray Productions. “The Real World: Las Vegas” goes inside the lives of Adam, Dustin, Heather, Leroy, Michael, Naomi, and Nany. As the season progresses, the roommates get to know each other and experience the ups and downs of life while living at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Everything in Vegas this time around is on a grander scale, and that will come across loud and clear this season. Romance amongst the cast members is at an all time high, as secrets revealed and relationships are challenged. While some relationships will fail, others will emerge stronger and deeper. “The Real World” was created for MTV by Jonathan Murray and Mary-Ellis Bunim of Bunim-Murray Productions. Jonathan Murray and Jim Johnston serve as Executive Producers of “The Real World: Las Vegas.” Jacquelyn French is the MTV executive overseeing the project. Hopefully the challenge goes on too.
Hopefully the challenge goes on too.
My guess is we won't know that until this new season begins.
Good news but only 2 more seasons makes me think the conversation went a little like this: "Man, we have only got one more season to go on the Jersey Shore thing so what the heck are we going to do?" "Don't know yet. Maybe we should keep the Real World around just in case." "Sure, but not too long cause we might come up with something better. Wasn't like we ever planned on those Jersey creeps making us a gazillion dollars, who knows what might happen." "Yep. Eventually we will figure out a way to cut BMP completely out of the our profits, but until then, let's not let them get too comfortable."
They should just end the show. It's long overdue.
Excited, because I believe the challenge will also get renewed.
Yay!!!
Awesome!! :)
Great news!
Excited, because I believe the challenge will also get renewed.
They may get a season to season extension, but I think that franchise is in much greater danger than RW proper.
A step in the right directed. Extended until season 28, I hope the challenge at lease sticks around until season 23 because I want to see a whole generation change, (I'm sick of Fresh Meat, Austin and Key West showing up every season).
Only 2 seasons though? Is this good?

I'm surprised it was renewed for more than one season, but that clearly means MTV sees theres promise still in the show. Almost every prime time show is on a season to season basis. Real world las vegas is clearlyyyyy doing wel
There is no need for speculation here about the renewal. The demo rating for the last episode was better than advertisers paid for and it earned another year on that alone. It was equal to shows running on the big 4 in Prime Time.
I honeslty can't see this show ending honestly. I hope not, even thoguh I don't like all the seaosns it's just not normal not to have a RW on MTV.
I don't know how long this show will go on, but it gets real dry at times and repetitive. The challenges are the best though.
I don't know how long this show will go on, but it gets real dry at times and repetitive. The challenges are the best though.
MTV has resigned itself to the fact that, over time, some of its demographic moves on to other shows at the 10 pm Wed slot. Fortunately, they receive an influx of newbies each season who don't have much experience with the "seven strangers" drunken hookups, stupid dialogue, etc, that is now the staple of the show, thus maintaining relatively flat and acceptable ratings. While I've not been in the demographic for decades, I only find myself watching RW on DVR (with heavy use of "fast forward," opting for Bravo or the m,ajor networks at 10 pm instead.

I think if they did an Inferno or Island or something like that with a cast of only 20 people, they can at least keep some of the usual suspects off and use newer people. I don't see that happening, but it could work.
Where are the new seasons going to be?
Where are the new seasons going to be?
They don't know yet.
Where are the new seasons going to be?
From now til they do it, I am always going to say they need to go to Memphis.
From now til they do it, I am always going to say they need to go to Memphis.
It's likely to be a repeat of a city.
From now til they do it, I am always going to say they need to go to Memphis.
Why Memphis? I wouldn't mind another foreign location - I'd love to see the RW China or Japan...and gasp, with a asian cast mate or two.
I just want another Asian female and a season in North Carolina or Virginia.
Why Memphis? I wouldn't mind another foreign location - I'd love to see the RW China or Japan...and gasp, with a asian cast mate or two.
Home of Elvis & Beale Street. Pretty fun place. I would like to see them do South Africa, but Japan is a little too radioactive right now.
It's likely to be a repeat of a city.
It makes me mad that they've been repeating cities on practically every season now. There are so many other places they haven't been to yet.
I don't think its that likely to be a repeat city, I believe the only reason they went back to New Orleans and Las Vegas was because they knew it would equal better ratings and would therefore secure a renewal. Now they have this renewal I'm hoping BMP will be a bit more adventurous and stop playing it safe. Ive always said Hong Kong would be cool, and most people speak English there so there would be no language barrier yet it would still be very China.
I don't see that any place in Asia would be a natural draw for more audience members. For something like that, Ireland would be the best place to go.
Real World Jersey Shore?!
They should really make the RW 30 minutes again and once a year for these two seasons.
