Ah well, let's hope next season isn't so bad.
Ah well, let's hope next season isn't so bad.
Wasn't that said by someone last season?
Wasn't that said by someone last season?
It's a repeating pattern. Give it the axe.
Are there ratings for the reunion show?
....There is still one more challenge under contract. The series needs to either find its roots or appeal to a dramatically larger audience to score an average 1.8 rating, in my view. There was a time when twenty-somethings watched a RW/RR challenge as a guilty pleasure, but those days have apparently past along with most of the arguably great competitors.
While I don't disagree whole-heartedly, I have always suspected that the Viacom-MTV-BMP ownership arrangement will keep the Challenges and TRW on TV longer than if there wasn't a vertical vested interest.
Are there ratings for the reunion show?
No. It is very unlikely that ratings for the reunion will ever turn up here; Travis Yanan, who ultimately supplies the Nielsen ratings that get reported here, has told me that he can not obtain Cable ratings outside of the 8-11 block (7-11 Sundays). Historically the other way that ratings were obtained was through an MTV Press release - I doubt we'll see one of those for this. My new employer does not advertise on TV so I can no longer just look it up. Sorry.

BMP was privately owned until recently when they were bought out by Banijay Entertainment, a French media company, after the failed purchase of the company the year before by Talpa Media (NL), the now financially troubled holding company for the Jon de Mol/Big Brother empire.

I'll see if I can go back and figure out what made me think that. If they do not, then it doesn't seem as if MTV would care what the production costs for RW/Challenges are--they would just pay what they would be willing to pay and the rest would be up to BMP to deal with.

BMP makes the shows for them, and can't bring the shows to another network, syndicate, create international versions of the show in foreign markets, etc.

The RW was created by BMP's founder Mary-Ellis Bunim. I don't believe they sold the rights to MTV. I've never seen the contract, so I'm only working on my memory of what I once heard at an industry party in LA. BMP may well be able to move the franchise elsewhere.

There's an interview out there with Jon Murray talking about how BMP was selling the format rights to "Bad Girls Club" to other companies internationally, and this is something they can't do with their original shows.

I've negotiated and signed similar contracts myself. I don't think you grasp was Jon was talking about. Jon has also said that he believed RW would be around for many years. He didn't say that it would always be on MTV. MTV does own the rights, "full and in perpetuity, in any and all media now and hereafter devised..." But... the rights are to the series paid for by MTV, not necessarily the rights to the franchise/concept. Frequently, networks will by both rights, but years ago they didn't. It all depends...

I heard something at a party in LA at least 6 or 7 years ago, and my memory of that night was just as hazy the next morning as it is today. Tequila shots.... are my downfall. I blame ******.
