I can see The Real World continuing on since it's such a big part of MTV, however I think The Challenge's days are number. I only expect a few more seasons.
I think The Real World is just as vulnerable. MTV doesn't play nowadays. The show just isn't as special as it once was on the network; both shows are definitely running on fumes.

Real World: New Orleans had similar ratings to this season of 16 and Pregnant, which has been the highest rated show on MTV every week since Jersey Shore Season 2 finished up. Unlike the Challenges, the Real World isn't particularly expensive because no one ever does anything. I feel comfortable predicting its renewal.

Doesn't the house usually cost millions for RW?
I think the Real World is vunerable. Their ratings arent that great anymore and I think it has to do with the fact that the fans of the show are a different group. Back in the 90's, the kids that watched the show really cared about these people but I feel now, the fans just care about them drinking, hooking up, and fighting. We dont get much a back story anymore with cast members like we used to.
I agree with what most are saying about the dropping ratings and such, but MTV is in such a good place right now revenue wise. I do not think that they are as concerned about saving every penny they can like in the past. With Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, 16 & Pregnant, The VMA's this year and ******* 3D, their profit is at an all time high and their popularity has skyrocketed. Though I understand the challenges and the Real World have dropped in ratings over the years and that their production costs are high, they are a staple of MTV and also hold a lot of opportunity for integrated marketing opportunities unlike some of MTV's scripted shows. Plus, they are still surpassing World of Jenks, The buried Life, My Life as Liz, Hard Times of RJ Berger, and If you Really Knew Me in ratings. Finally, I have seen some previews of what is to come for MTV programming wise this spring and trust me, it is not promising. I will hold out hope for these shows and I do think that season 21 of the challenge will be one to remember.

I bet they didn't pay a penny for the Hard Rock.
Why would a house cost millions? The New Orleans house is on the market to purchase forever for 1.6 Million - and I'm sure renting it for a few months didn't cost anywhere's near as much as the purchase price.
I am really curious as to what format challenge 21 is going to be. I know it's heavily speculated it's going to be a duel 3 but maybe they'll surprise us with yet another fresh idea.

Ok, maybe not millions, but definitely over a million. They do buy the place, and then they have to fix it up and fit in all the mics and cameras and the production room in there. Obviously they'll make some of it back selling it, but not nearly as much as it cost to get it RW-ready.
What MTV needs to do if its re-newed is have one RW and one Challenge season per year, at least 2 RW and one Challenge like it used to be when RR was around.

I read this as "another fresh meat idea" and I was like "dear God, no". Thankfully that wasn't the case. But lemme tell ya, I was concerned for a moment.
So, the execs at MTV must decide if the expensive challenges and The Real World series are sufficiently financially sustainable or are otherwise defensible corporately. To my knowledge, MTV has not moved any cast member(s) to his or her own series, although there were discussions along those lines at one time (I was involved in a couple of pitches years ago). V1man,
Didn't Veronica (and possibly Rachel) have some sort of pilot actually make it on the air on MTV? I thought it was something with making everyday 'losers' into 'bad chicks'.

That idea came up around 2004 and it eventually turned into what is now known as "Bad Girls Club". I remember there was a lot of talk about a Rachel/Veronica/Tina spinoff after Inferno 2.
How amazing would it have been to have a Bad Girls Club with Rachel, Veronica, Tina, Coral, Tonya and Beth!
1 request for Challenge 21 and future challenges.....no more Brad and Tori pleae.

Do you remember the title it aired under? I remember seeing it on TV.
I really doubt they would do another one after this one. Especially not back to back. They both have jobs.
Well supposedly they did say they would do another one.
Well I'm assuming that Katie wont be on either since she will be in school. I'm trying to keep an eye out on twitter to see if there are any clues to anyone else being aked or on, is it too early?

Invitations have not gone out yet, but availability checks have.
Give it a about three more weeks and we will start to see some social network clues (Circa beginning to mid January). Remember the Challenge starts filming February 1st so departure is probably very close to the end of January.
Katie isn't in school at the moment since it's break. Depending on if her school is the quarter system or semesters, maybe she'd able to do it, but doubtful. Semester schools usually begin late or early February and I don't know what the quarter system is like. All I know is that Mark has stated numerous times that he is not doing the next one.

I don't know what kind of semesters your school work on, mine started the second week in January...
Sorry, I meant late January. Usually the third week. Altho in LA, I know the JCs begin first week of Febuary. At the least the one I went to did.
Mine started the first week in January now that I think of it. The first Tuesday after the new year. But we were out by the last week in April.
The only school I know of on quarters has a schedule like early Jan-mid March, late March-early June, mid June-late August, early September-late December.
