If this is in fact the last challenge, I could totally see them doing Old School vs. New School if they can get enough old people back to assemble a team.
Aneesa posted on Twitter that she was hitting the gym to lose 10 lbs. for "Feb" and Derrick's stated he doesn't think this is the last challenge, but I don't think cast of any show know they're done till they hear it themselves.
O RLY SNIP?
I love how you went old school with the "O RLY" bird. Anyways, I think its hella awesome some old people are supposedly being asked to come back. That's hella awesome. Why didn't they do this for season 20. 21 is still good but they should've celebrated the 20th season. Oh well.
And lol at Emilee talking and talking on and on much about nothing. And why did they post that episode early anyway?
Shane posted on his facebook that he's going on a trip and Veronica asked him for what and he said it's secret. Could be a clue. Could be irrelevant. Just thought I'd throw that out there, haha.

Where does it say that?

Interesting how all of these people are hitting the gym within the last week, maybe Carley's status did mean something?
I'm excited to just see who has been asked; I would love to see Susie, Tonya, Diem, Paula, Melinda, McKenzie, and Carely come back.
Curious if either Molds, Bacchus or V1 can answer this for me, what will re-newal be based on the ratings for Cutthroat or the next Challenge?
I'm none of those people but I can tell you that it is very likely that MTV will announce its decision before Challenge 21 finishes airing, as that's just how TV works. Shows are virtually always renewed or cancelled prior to their final airings.
For example:
The Duel II was the last Challenge on the previous contract, and the Challenge was renewed 2 weeks before it aired.
RW:Cancun was the last Real World on the previous contract, and The Real World was renewed while Cancun was still in filming.
If they time it the same as last time, we're looking at March-April for an announcement.
So a lot rides on Cutthroat and the first few episodes of Challenge 21?
I would say that a lot rode on Cutthroat, but that the important people at MTV probably already have a gut feeling about what to do. There will probably be some sort of unofficial meeting once this season ends to review. Someone will make a tentative decision and they'll ultimately go with it. Like Road Rules, I doubt they'll formally cancel it, leaving the door open. The press release announcing The Real World renewal (almost a lock) will either also announce a challenge renewal or it will just remain silent.
The only way I can see the first few episodes of Challenge 21 having much of an effect is if they're down sharply.
This post is all obviously just my opinion. They might wait this time and see what the Challenge 21 numbers are; there's no reason to rush, its not like Dunbar is going to get cast on another show in the meantime.

Answering your question with precision would require that I think there is some traditionally rational thought process at work within MTV. Every network is different in how they approach programming decisions. I know this from numerous pitch meetings and series contract discussions over the years. "CastAStone's" previous comment has much merit. There is a strong personal attachment to the cast/series on the part of some at MTV -- their VP for music and series development and their senior producer involved with all the reunion shows and specials in particular; but, I've heard that Viacom establishes revenue targets for each of their business units, of which MTV Networks is just one. I think most companies do this is some fashion. It's just not clear to me, given the high costs of production, particularly now that it is shot in HD, that it's returning sufficient profit. The quarterly and yearly bottom line is all it's really about unless the execs involved want to bet their futures. While most don't, and play it safe as a result, this group of execs did take a great risk with Jersey Shore, so they have street cred with Viacom's leadership who may hold their nose at the shows but happily cash their bonus checks.
So, the execs at MTV must decide if the expensive challenges and The Real World series are sufficiently financially sustainable or are otherwise defensible corporately. To my knowledge, MTV has not moved any cast member(s) to his or her own series, although there were discussions along those lines at one time (I was involved in a couple of pitches years ago). Other networks do this, but the fact that MTV has not suggests they have very modest ambitions for the future (not that 20+ seasons are not great in themselves), but the stockholders from the early days of CBS ownership of and profit from Real World are long gone. All that matters is the bottom line now -- unless there is some compelling network development reason to retain the challenges.
There is another challenge under contract, so while there may be an inclination now within MTV about the way ahead, there is no reason not to wait until they see the dailies sent in from the future challenge location before beginning to make to clear decisions. Cutthroat's ratings, though lackluster, were good enough for MTV to recently greenlight the next challenge, so there is hope.
Challenge 21 will air in april just like fresh meat 2 did?
I'm guessing more like late May/June for a premiere. After Cutthroat ends there will be a break of like 8-10 weeks with no Real World based programming at all.
Do they sell seasons on DVD? Would that make any money?
You can buy full seasons on iTunes now, which I do. As far as offsetting the cost of production, I don't know how effective it would be.
I was always under the impression they didn't sell seasons of the Real World on DVD because there wasn't a market for it (although I've seen a few like Las Vegas and B2NY). I could be wrong however.

I know a few are on Netflix from the older seasons and I think, the more scandalous seasons. There are also a few of those Best Of... series, too, like Best Vacations and Best Fights. I watched the Best Of... ones and they were all from older seasons and not worth bothering with. There are a handful of challenges up for sale on iTunes and some are on MTV Canada, if you're either in Canada or have a reliable proxy to go through. I do think they'd make enough money off sales of individual seasons and the challenges, if they sold them and they'd definitely make something selling to Netflix, Blockbuster and the other chain stores. It's not as costly to produce DVDs, as it may seem, especially since there are thousands of third party companies to choose from.
One thing I would do, personally, is bring in sponsors, like they have in past challenges. They have advertising, merchandising, official events and other ways to bring in extra income on top of advertising to help the show out. It's a matter of getting a solid marketing team to explore these things. If they can put out a line of ****ty Jersey ***** swag, why not do the same with the challenges? Plus, if they considered doing the next one in the United States, it could generate a lot of local income for where they film and would save money on scouting, flights and hotels. Two, choose countries based on the exchange rate. When they shot in Brazil, the exchange rate then was 3:1 and that saved them a TON of money and meant the cast could spend MORE money when they went out, so everyone won and it helped raise relations with locals, rather than **** them off that a bunch of drunk kids are running amok.
Three: BOX SETS! Inferno 1-3 box sets, Gauntlet 1-3 box sets, etc. Packaging would be insanely simple and if they put them out around the holidays, they could make a mint off of them. Same with the RW and RR seasons.
HIRE ME, MTV!
I have a feeling the next challenge is the last because of what Abram answered on his formspring

I dont really see anything that translates to this being the last.
From everything I have read it seems like the end isnt really in sight of the competitors.
From reading Abe's thing it seems as though its going to be a Duel 3 with some big players being brought back.

Perhaps you missed the ratings thread for Cutthroat.
All TV show's ratings are pretty much down from their norm. People are either trying to work to make a living, or dont have the time/money to sit around and watch TV anymore....thats life, if all shows were cancelled because their ratings were down from previous seasons then we wouldnt have any TV shows.
I havent seen any evidence (non circumstantial) that has lead to believe that the show will be cancelled.

Were you expecting a press release or a notice arriving by registered mail? Clearly much of this thread deals in speculation. Some of it is even informed.

Of course its circumstantial. The circumstances aren't good. You want numbers? Here's some numbers. I used to buy ads on TV so these numbers are estimates but are educated estimates. This season a 1.0 A18-49 rating should average a cable show somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000,000 in ad revenue per hour. This season's ratings indicate that MTV will be able to charge around $7MM total for Challenge 21. MTV is renewing shows that it cannot possibly be making profits of more than $2MM per season on (like The Buried Life), so for The Challenge to be renewed from a financial perspective you would like to see then shows costs around $5MM or less. Perhaps someone like V1Man can shed some perspective on what it costs to do a series like this - my guess is more than $5MM.
Of course, the decision also has to be made as to whether the show still fits with the Network's current and future branding efforts.

Are you serious? If so, I so need to step my Challenge game up.
I can see The Real World continuing on since it's such a big part of MTV, however I think The Challenge's days are number. I only expect a few more seasons.
