The key is to get him out now so he can't throw it back on your face in a jury...
His logic is warped.
If he kept the idol, he could play it. Then next week maybe they win. Then maybe the week after there is a merge and it is a new game.
It was in no way a done deal that he was going next week or that he had to make this move.
Isn't part of the game to get yourself as far as possible by doing whatever you can? If Jane switched sides, it was clearly to get herself further in the game.

I guess it wouldn't have mattered as with a tie they would have stuck to the plan and voted out Jill - and then she would have looked like an *******.
Better to go out with some conviction left in the tank.
