2010 Olympics - Vancouver
Anyone else going to be following the Winter Olympics? I'm would never watch the majority of these sports (especially figure skating) but it just makes me feel patriotic to tune in and cheer on the men and women who participate. The opening ceremonies will be broadcast live with the festivities on NBC starting at 7:30PM Eastern Time. I'll be tuning in...
The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, will be a major international multi-sport event held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the resort town of Whistler, British Columbia and in the Vancouver suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands. The 2010 Winter Olympics will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.
I'm excited to watch these too! It's nice when the Olympics are on because it's my go to thing to watch in between other things or when nothing else is on. I especially like watching the figure skating, snowboarding, curling, and biathlon (skiing and rifle-shooting). USA! USA! USA! :D

I just read about the accident. So very sad and tragic. I hope Georgia decides to stay in the games. I always watch the games. I love cheering people on, even if they aren't from my country. Plus, as long as Bode Miller is in the games I gotta watch and support my fellow New Hampshire-ite! Bode! Bode! Bode! I fully expect him to win a gold medal skiing on one ski. ;) I'm a big fan of hockey of course and all the skiing and snowboarding events. I also like figure skating, luge, speed skating and curling is even entertaining to have on while I am doing something else. I know the winter Olympics typically don't perform nearly as well as the summer ones but I am a bigger fan of more winter sports than summer, so I looked forward to these games.
Also, this video got me cheering for the Norwegian ski team a little too. Got to love a team that can have a little fun! YouTube - The Norwegian alpine ski team dancing
I just read about the accident. So very sad and tragic. I hope Georgia decides to stay in the games.
They just showed it on the CBS News. I can't believe they showed it... He just flew off the track and then hit a steel pole and it rung like a bell, stopping him instantly. Very, very tragic. I actually like watching everything, from curling to the ski events and biathlon. I love the spirit of the games and even sports that I normally would not pay attention to, have special meaning and gravitas. EDIT: They are showing it on CNN now. I don't think they should be showing the video, but I guess we are so desensitized these days, they'll show anything.

I wonder if Canada will actually win gold this year? They currently haven't won a gold medal while hosting an olympics yet. (2 Olympics prior to this one)
They are showing it on CNN now. Stills are one thing, but the actual video, so quickly after the accident is too much. The opening ceremonies are in a few hours (or did they already happen? not sure because of the time difference thing), his family has JUST been notified and just out of respect for the family alone they shouldn't be showing it. The thing I am worried about the most though, is other luge competitors getting freaked out and hurting themselves on the track if they mess up or are off their game because of having that in the back of their mind. I'd rather have a less exciting luge ride then see others get hurt.

(2 Olympics prior to this one)
I thought Calgary 1988 was the only other time Canada has hosted? We'll see though. Germany and Russia have been pretty dominant in the past and I'm assuming this year won't be too different.
I thought Calgary 1988 was the only other time Canada has hosted?
Montreal 1976. I have no doubt they will win a few gold metals. They won 7 in Turin and 7 in Salt Lake City.
Actually, my memory was just jogged. I have two gold coins from the '76 Olympics in my safe that were given to me by my grandparents. Totally forgot about them.
Ahhh right! I was just thinking of Winter Olympics, whoops. Very cool that your grandparents got you those coins Bacchus!

Yeah, those ice dancers in college? They go to Michigan ;) I feel like Vancouver would be a great place to live (apart from the fact that it's in Canada). It's beautiful!
I feel like Vancouver would be a great place to live (apart from the fact that it's in Canada). It's beautiful!
At the top of my list. If I decide against the island life in my later years, I'll definitely be hitting up Vancouver.
That looks like more than 25 people... Just sayin.
I am so excited. It is hard to explain. There is something about the Olympics that makes me smile. Great opening.
Quite possibly the slowest version of O Canada I have ever heard. But she did sing it well. I think it's weird that it's not playing on the West Coast until 7:30.
I will say it is a bit weird that Canada has not thrown off fully, its colonial ruler. Stephen Harper should be opening the games....but I guess not. Instead, you have some secondary proxy to the Queen of England.
I think it's weird that it's not playing on the West Coast until 7:30.
They are not doing it live? I didn't read that. Too bad. If it is not live, no one cares as they already read about it on the internet...
Matt Lauer needs to shut up.
Matt Lauer needs to shut up.
Interesting. I say that every morning. :D
Interesting. I say that every morning. :D
I just much prefer hearing it the way the people are there. Obviously we'll understand it. We don't need his commentary while other people are talking. I really like this introducing of these nations. It's something original.
They are not doing it live? I didn't read that. Too bad. If it is not live, no one cares as they already read about it on the internet...
Yup not live here and the 6 o'clock news is showing "sneak peeks" of the ceremonies! Lame, I don't want it ruined for me!
Hello, Azerbaijan pants.
Yup not live here and the 6 o'clock news is showing "sneak peeks" of the ceremonies! Lame, I don't want it ruined for me!
That's a shame. One of the things I hated about living on the West Coast. The Olympic schedule, no matter where it is in the world, is focused on ET. Half the population of the US lives there. You add in Central Time which is broadcast sync'd and you are talking about 73% of the US population. I remember with China, they did the events early in the morning to match prime time viewing on the East Coast. NBC is a horrible network and they have not learned from past mistakes. With Beijing, they showed the live feed in EST and then delayed it on the west coast, after the results were in...and the ratings bombed. It was all over the internet. Once again, they are repeating the same mistakes. Why? Because of affiliates. They own those hours and are not going to give them to the network.
I am waiting for Georgia. It will be interesting to see if they are still participating as there has been talk about them leaving. A very somber moment for sure, should they march in Olympic Stadium.
I'm getting some great ideas for my next round of snowboarding gear. I was wondering if they will be including the deceased luger in their athlete count.
