the field goal was with 8 seconds left. Yeah as time was expiring. The bills were down one. Their goal was to get down the field and to put points on the board to win the game. They got to field goal range and let the clock run so they can just win the game. They didn't need a touchdown to win.

They had no time outs. Thurman Thomas got a shotgun hand off for the first down to the 29 yard line. Jim Kelly spiked the ball with 8 left. They had no time outs and they were in field goal range with 8 seconds left. It's their only move. They had one time out starting the drive off at their own 15. All this support for kelly goes without saying that he revolutionized and basically made the west coast offense a widely used offensive scheme.

The overall point is that the guy has lost 4 Super Bowls. 4. Does anyone else have that bad of a record?
No but Tarketon has a much worse playoff record, a worse rating, and three super bowl losses. It was a 47 yard field goal. A chip shot for Scott Norwood. There was absolutely no need.

Not 47 yards for a guy whose career long was 52.
47 Should be a chip shot for any nfl kicker. it wasn't the distance either he kicked it slightly wide right. it is not kelly's fault. Like when the Broncoes played the Falcons nobody on the Falcons choked, they played a good game. The Broncoes were just a way better team. Kelly never choked, he played well in the super bowl just the Cowboys were a better team and the Redskins were a better team.
It was a 47 yard field goal. A chip shot for Scott Norwood.
Wow, how long have you been watching football? A 47 yard field goal in a playoff environ is a "chip shot?"
Not a chip shot. But you should be able to make it. I've been watching football for thirteen years.
Update: Norwood's longest field goal kick that season was from 48 yards. Scott Norwood and the Most Notable Failed Field Goal Kickers in the NFL Playoffs

Why not just say "You know what? You can have it this year...you were the better team."
Not a chip shot. But you should be able to make it. I've been watching football for thirteen years.
K, let me know when you hit it.
I'm not getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to kick field goals though. That's not what I'm saying. Plus it's not Kelly's call, it's the coach's call.

Plus it's not Kelly's call, it's the coach's call.
Oh really... I have seen players refuse to come off the field. They tell the coach "You know what? No. I'm gonna do it my way." The article B just posted said that it was very common for field goal kickers to miss from that range. So it wasn't a "chip shot". I've been watching football for a long time. I am not about to say that 47 yards is easy.
they had confidence in their kicket. I know that in no way was tha tKelly's fault. The kicker mixed the field goal, Marv Levy led them that far they all had faith in Scott Norwood.
A chip shot is a field goal attempt under 30 yards. As for Marino, he shattered records as a passer and is well known as one of the few QBs who should have won a Superbowl. Tarkenton lost 2 of his Superbowls against Bradshaw & the Steelers if I recall. Another reason Tarkenton is in the Hall of Fame, the guy invented the scrambling quarterback. For every QB like Vick, Vince Young, McNabb that takes off running around the backfield and throwing when out of the pocket on the run, Tarkenton was the first to do it! He broke the mold and his coach, the great Norm Van Brocklin who set the single game passing record of 537 yards, was a great pocket QB who used to hound Tarkenton and get on his case all the time about staying put. Tarkenton's usual response was "I can still make the play if I move." Kelly choked a lot. He was not a great QB but he was a classy guy and took the blame when things did not work out for the offense he was commanding. When it succeeded more credit went to Thurman Thomas than to Kelly. Many QBs were good but not great: Esiason, McMahon, Testaverde, Moon, etc. Warner deserves to be in the Hall of Fame for his performance: 9-5 Playoff record, 1-2 Superbowls, the top 3 highest passer ratings in Playoff history, and he broke several passing records (including some set by Marino). Off the field, Warner is a very model of what the NFL espouses for being active and promoting good things in the community. The NFL holds him up as an example to younger players.
How could you say Kelly was not a great quarterback. He lead the Bills to the best seasons they've ever had. He is on the all time top 20 lists in almost every category. He basically invented the west coast offense along with Marv Levy. There's no saying he's not a great quarterback. He's not the best clearly but he will be a quarterback that will always be remembered. You can't not be great and make it into the hall of fame and have your jersey retired.
Tell Nate Kaeding 47 yard field goal is a chip shot. I bet he would be all to pleased with that. Also the only person who may be able to consider that a chip shot would be Stephan Janikowski.
You can't not be great and make it into the hall of fame and have your jersey retired.
You can if you play for the Bills.
Haha that is funny. I was actually surprised to find that Andre Reed isn't in the hall of fame yet the 2 other members are in.
Well Bruce Smith is in and James Lofton is also fromt hat team. Whatever chip shot was not the right word, but if you're getting paid to make field goals. That should be one that you make.

Seriously if that is true that is awful. To me right now it seems like just her say and with the lapse in time it makes it seem very suspicious. (almost a year) Also having child support case at the same time makes it convient that she filed now. Agian if this happened that is terrible but he hasn't went to trial and until he is convicted I try to avoid the mud slinging.
He basically invented the west coast offense along with Marv Levy.
Actually Bill Walsh and Joe Montana are the guys who pioneered the West Coast Offense (part of the reason it got labeled that way was because of the 49ers starting it).
Actually Bill Walsh and Joe Montana are the guys who pioneered the West Coast Offense (part of the reason it got labeled that way was because of the 49ers starting it).
The funny thing is Jim Kelly (along with Dan Marino) is listed as someone specifically that played in the old style system, not West Coast Offense. Not sure where andrews is pulling his data from, but with 47 yard "chip shots" and saying Jim Kelly invented the West Coast offense, I'm guessing his ***. ;)
I'm an avid football watcher. When i said 40 yards I did not mean a chip shot. I'm simply saying if you're getting paid a million dollars to kick a ball through posts better than anybody else, you should be able to hit from 40 plus yards pretty well. On the Jim Kelly notion I was completely wrong, I typed the wrong thing. But he did play the no-huddle K-gun offense and he played it well. They were one of the only teams that ran a no huddle, and it worked for them. And yeah there's many more ba crimes players are accused of that don'ot even get publiccized. Corey Mcintyre from the Bills was arrested for ************ outside some woman's window. But he got innocent.
What is up with the Pro Bowl this year? I didn't even know it was on and caught it flipping through the channels. Playing it a week before the Super Bowl is ridiculous as you lose all the players from the two best teams (and not just the standard marquee players that drop out because of phantom injuries.) And I know that they have used other venues in the past, but I just expect it to be in Hawaii. I mean, it had been there for 30 straight seasons! Anyway, I think this was a bad call on the NFL's part, to move this game up being it already was a somewhat underwhelming and irrelevant event... (I couldn't tell you who won any Pro Bowl without actually looking it up.) Edit: At least they are going back to Hawaii next year although they won't seem to commit on if the game will be after or before the Super Bowl.
