Actually, my brother did. He has an HP something or other. A few days ago he spilled mushrooms on it. He waited hoping it would dry. Now, the computer comes on but the monitor won't. Any words of wisdom? What can we do to fix it?
Quick question for diagnostic purposes...
Did your laptop screen look something like this after the "incident?"

In all seriousness it depends. Hopefully you did not try to turn it on while it was still wet. That would create unwanted connections on the motherboard and fry it. I had a similar accident a few years back where someone spilled a glass of wine on my [strike]baby[/strike] laptop.
I had to have the motherboard replaced along with a variety of internal components. It was expensive (I think the bill was $1100.) Luckily it was under warranty and I was able to open it up (discreetly) and clean out all the wine residue, so I made them replace the "malfunctioning" equipment for free.
The best thing you can do is tip it at an angle and give it a few days to dry before turning it on (I didn't have that option as the wine turned it off - permanently, lol.)
If it is out of warranty, you might want to open it up or have someone that knows what they are doing open it up and clean the inside carefully with some static free wipes.
If it is in warranty, call the manufacturer and just say it stopped working and don't offer any info. Usually they will just fix it at minimal cost.

He did turn it on today. He gave it a few days to dry. Hopefully it was dry already. I guess we'll have to see what happens.

A blow dryer would be fine and is recommended for such an accident, although you are probably past the time window where it would be effective being the majority of liquid should have evaporated already leaving behind residuals.

If it was me. I'd open it up and individually remove all the components, wipe them down and look for any scoring on the motherboard to see if there was a short. It is really not that hard and all you need is a phillips screw driver and maybe a camera to take a picture so you can put everything back as it was.
Let it air out and try again in another day.
Chances are if it is not working now and it has been 24 hours, the machine is dead and needs major repairs. The most common thing is for the power to arc on the motherboard, frying the CPU and other components.

Like I said, take a picture. It will come in handy. Also, get a piece of paper and put all the screws from each component in a separate area and label them.
Oh, and make sure you are static free as discharging into the machine would be very bad (not that I think you can do more harm at this point.)
Pull the RAM, Hard drive and Wireless card. They should all be easily accessible.
Also, make sure the batter is out! :D

You should be able to retrieve the full hard drive and upload the image to a new notebook.

Looks like a nice little machine that is selling below sticker. Can't go wrong with HP in my book (my last 3 laptops have been business class HPs) and I love convertible tablets.
In the end, I guess it depends on what you plan to use it for. Although that looks to be a good all around notebook.

When he took it apart, there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the inside. After he put it back together he actually put it in the oven for a few hours.. lol When he took it out, it came on. The inside didn't appear to be wet at all though. It was such a weird situation. I suggested he back his info up elsewhere. I have a feeling it might go out again.
