As the head women's soccer coach at the Southwest Baptist University in Missouri, he is called "Coach Wade," but he also goes by “Maestro” due to role as an artistic director and conductor of a California symphony orchestra. A skilled musician, Benjamin was traveling the world playing the trumpet before most kids could even spell "trumpet." Wade sees coaching as another form of manipulation. "You have to find out what everybody wants, what everybody needs, what they think they want, what think they need and then you have to be the person that solves everything." He knows these skills will be valuable in the game of SURVIVOR. If Benjamin was asked to wear just one hat, it would be that of "Renaissance Man." Aside from setting the world record for the longest solo kayak expedition on the ocean (an amazing 6,132 miles), Wade has also been attacked by a tiger shark, stalked by a jaguar in the Amazon and has been bitten by a piranha on his right hand. To say that he is a Type A, Alpha male, who likes to control the environment around him may just be an understatement. Coach's dominant personality will be a force to be reckoned with in the game. Benjamin is single and currently splits his time in Bolivar, Mo, and Susanville, Calif. His birth date is September 18.
From tvguide:
Benjamin Wade, 37, soccer coach/part-time orchestra conductor from Bolivar, Mo.- "I'm in this game because I want to change it," says Wade, who kayaked 6.132 miles from Baja, California, to Colombia-alone. "it's become survival of the weakest. I want the strongest to survive. I want to team up with worthy opponents. May the best man or woman win."
Here is is myspace
Rumor has it around my town, Susanville, California, that our Symphony Conductor is a contestant. His name is Ben Wade. He had been gone for a while and reappeared at the December concert...had lost a lot of weight and word has it that he was in South America. Quite a few people in town say that he was on Survivor, but he can't/hasn't confirmed it yet. He just said that there will be an announcement after the Superbowl on National TV. It all fits.......

Benjamin Wade became the seventh head soccer coach for Southwest Baptist University on April 13, 2005. “It had been a goal of mine to come back to a Christian institution because that is very important to me," Wade said. "My life is centered on Christ and I want to be at an institution that has the same core values and beliefs that I do. I was incredibly impressed with Southwest Baptist from the time that they contacted me to the follow up and to how SBU supports the student-athlete. It was very professional and clear that this door was opening up for me to come here." In his 12 years as a head coach, Wade has coached 9 All-Americans, 22 academic All-Americans, coached the California Olympic development program, a host of national teams, and has been named Coach of the Year 6 times. Before moving to SBU, Wade coached in California for ten years. He started the women's soccer programs at both Simpson University and Lassen College as well as starting the men's and women's teams at Patten University. Wade was also involved heavily with the Olympic development system of California. At the pinnacle of his career in California, he complied a 67-6-1 record and left Lassen as the #2 winningest active junior college coach by the NSCAA. He took his first head coaching job at Simpson University (Redding, California) and built the program from ground up in 1997. In just two years at Simpson, he took SU to the National Christian College Athletic Association and finished ranked #8 in the nation in their first year and then finished ranked #3 in the nation his second year. He was twice named the NCCAA National Coach of the Year and his team in 1998 was ranked as high as #2 in the nation (NCCAA). His second stop was a two-year stay at Patten University in Oakland, California from 1999 through 2001. Again, Wade had to build the women’s soccer program from scratch. He coached both the men and women’s teams at Patten and was the conference coach of the year. In 2002, Wade moved to Lassen College to start their women’s soccer program. In his first year, he went 23-3-0 and lost the Final Eight of the California Community College Tournament, and finished with a #6 national ranking (NSCAA). In only his second season at Lassen, his team came close to being the best team in the nation and in the California Community College system but lost to four-time C.C.C. champion Long Beach. They had a regular season record of 20-0-0, finished the year at 23-1-0, and was ranked #3 in the nation (NSCAA). In his final season at Lassen, his team was ranked as high as #3 in the NSCAA Junior College Poll and finished with a #17 ranking and a 19-2-1 record. Wade graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1993 with a bachelors degree in business marketing. While at Tennessee, he played club soccer and then became an assistant coach for two years (1991-93). He received his master’s of music degree from the University of Nevada in May 2005. In the NSCAA, he has received the Premier, Advanced National, and National Diplomas. Wade also has interests outside of soccer and is considered by most to be a true "Renaissance Man." In 1996 he paddled 6,132 miles to set the world record for the longest solo kayak expedition. He paddled for six months on the Pacific Ocean from San Felipe, Mexico to Colombia, South America. In 1988 Wade was voted among the best trumpet players in the world by winning the ITG international trumpet competition in Dallas, TX. He is currently the Conductor/Artistic Director for the Susanville Symphony, and has composed over 50 classical works for symphony orchestras. Back to soccer, working internationally, Wade has trained teams all over the world. Several of these included: Cameroon National Team 1999, Cordoba FC Argentina 2000 & 2001, Arsenal Ladies 2002,West Indies National Team 2002, Enfield Town (London) 2003, Bahamas and Barbados National Teams 2007. “I like small communities and it is obvious that the community respects and enjoys having SBU here. I think the facilities are unbelievable and the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center rivals anything that any NCAA Division II University has. I have been very impressed and have had a positive experience," says Wade.
Ben is on the black tribe, Timbira. YouTube - Survivor Tocantins - Meet Benjamin
via Survivor Sucks, this is a photo of Ben Wade after returning to the US in December (and here is the press picture taken the day before the game began): Definitely looks like he will last deep into the game
Wow, that is insane!
More info connected to the picture where Ben looks emaciated: As per this article, (the following contains spoiler inferences):
he states that his symphony concert was the day he arrived home from Brazil (the concert was December 12). This means that filming wrapped on December 11, as it always wraps on a Thursday. If that picture was taken the day of the symphony, that means it was taken less than 24 hours after the final tribal council. If Ben had gone to the jury house, he would have had time to shave the beard and clean up a little bit. But it does not look like he ever had time to do that, as the 24-28 hours between tribal council and the concert included a long flight from Brazil, to probably LA (looking at expedia, 17 hours is the shortest flight), and then LA to Susanville or a nearby airport. Since he doesn't appear to have had time to clean up, it is likely that he never went to Ponderosa, and was one of the last 2 or 3 who faced the jury. He also states that "when I got to Susanville I was still focused on Brazil." A person voted off prior to day 39 would have some time to put that behind them but the very short turnover period probably left his mind racing. I don't know for a fact that he's a finalist but using facts to make inferences makes it a pretty good bet that it is.
It looks like Ben Wade was fired from his job.
"Survivor" contestant Ben Wade might survive the Brazilian Highlands, but he couldn't get through his day job. Less than a week after Wade premiered on the CBS reality TV show, Southwest Baptist University fired Wade as its head women's soccer coach. Wade said Tuesday that he plans to pursue an acting career. "I'm going to be the next big thing on the big screen," Wade said in a phone interview. SBU athletic director Brent Good said the school bought out the remaining three months of Wade's contract because Wade did not tell Good that he left the team at mid-season to be on television. "He said he was going to be gone for a week," Good said. "And the week went beyond that, which went beyond that, which went beyond that." Good said Wade left the team on Oct. 22 -- with two weeks left in the season -- to go to the Brazilian Highlands to shoot the 18th season of the hit reality show. He returned to campus eight weeks later, on Dec. 17. Wade said Good informed him of the decision Monday. He said the news was a surprise and that he hopes to continue his television career. "The administration felt like 'Survivor' was me going to Hollywood," Wade said. "I loved my time at SBU. Obviously, now I'm off to pursue adventures in Hollywood." Wade, a world-class trumpeter who holds the record for longest solo kayaking expedition, said he plans to leave today for California , where he will conduct the Susanville Symphony. He said he hopes to be on an all-star series of "Survivor" and that he'd like to host his own TV program, "The Coach Wade Show." "This has opened up a whole new world to me," Wade said. "I loved being myself on camera. There's going to be a lot of interest from the show in who I was and what I did. I'm definitely excited about that." Wade said most of his players understood his absence last year after he explained his appearance on the show. But SBU didn't. Good said the move had nothing to do with how Wade appeared on the show, which premiered Feb. 12. "Coach Wade's a good coach," Good said. "I think the choice he made to do what he did was not done in the right way. With that, there's a consequence with it. Unfortunately, that consequence is that his contract is not renewed, and he's no longer here." The decision comes five days after SBU announced its eight-person signing class of 2009. Good said SBU has formed a search committee to look for a new coach and that he hopes to fill the position this spring. He looks so gross and unhealthy! Yikes!
Wow, he is pretty full of himself. Next big thing? I know you aren't supposed to go blabbing that you are leaving to be on Survivor, but he couldn't come up with a better excuse than "I'll be back in a week" and then just not come back?? Weird. I thought I would like him better than I have so far. His performance in the last challenge was really disappointing, but we are only 2 episodes in so I'll give him a chance ;) haha
There has been a lot of talk about Wades alleged 6 thousand mile ocean kayak trip for the world record in the 1990's. I would like to point out that the record of over 9 thousand miles was set in 1982 by Paul Caffyn as he kayaked around Australia. His record breaking trip was well publicized and is easily verified via the internet and other publications where-as Wades claims seem to have no legs other than what appears to be a news paper clipping from "Hondurus This Week" March 31 1997, it reads (in part) as follows: "After 4,700 miles and five months on the water, this 25-year-old native of Tennessee beat the world record for one-man kayaking last week, as he entered the Gulf of Fonseca on the Honduran South Coast... But the story isn't over yet. Wade is only collecting experiences on his way to his final destination: Punta Charambira, Colombia. He plans to arrive there by March 1st, to make a 5,500 miles total trip. Even if he did kayak 6k miles, he is still well short of the record and ought to have done his homework prior to making such a claim.
