Thanks BoSoxMole! The numbers for RW seem to be dropping every week.
dpplayer18, did you only read BoSoxMole's comment without reading the comments above it which are substantially more in context? The show is up 17% week to week!
Shame on you! The amateur ***essment of ratings is something that has bugged my about as long as I've been working in and around TV, which is likely before almost anyone here was born.
Damn few people in the entertainment business can say they understanding the Nielsen Ratings System. In fact, at the major broadcast conventions there are often seminars which explain the system because in it not designed for public consumption. Nielsen just dresses up the pig once a week and hopes the public doesn't notice that their numbers are clouded in mystery.
BoSoxMole's post contains the top 20 cable shows across the full spectrum of the nominal demographic of viewers ages 18-54. So why is that meaningless to MTV and advertisers and is, for all practical purposes, a worthless measure of merit? It's simple; MTV doesn't give a rat's *** about people over 34, so you have to know how to discount every program that is marketed to that group.
What are the target demographics for The Real World?
- 12-18 and 18-34. The numbers for the 12-18 demographic are not available unless you pay Nielsen for it, so we are only going to see them rarely, and I can't even remember the last time I saw them. In the 18-34 demographic (most people reading here), the show has been in the top ten except for inauguration week when the entire list was weighted toward news coverage.
Here is a brief analysis of only two shows in the top ten in the list posted above by BoSoxMole:
-- The Suite Life on Deck (Disney Channel): TV's No. 1 scripted series in Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14 in 2008. It kills in this market and with parents who watch with their children (or claim to Neilsen that they don't let their children watch alone). The audience that TRW shares with Suite Life on Deck is likely fewer than 30,000 viewers.
-- The O'Reily Factor (Fox News Channel): According to a Pew Research study, 58% of viewers are over 50 (certainly not the TRW demographic). Nielsen Media Research, The O'Reilly Factor averaged 2.3 million viewers each night for November 2007, fewer than 400,000 viewers ages 25-50.
I could do a similar analysis for every other show listed, but hopefully you get the point. Comparing that ratings list is like comparing dissimilar foods. Apples aren't nuts; barley isn't tuna; and, frankly, apples aren't much like grapefruit either...
Fact: Among potential viewers MTV is trying to reach, The Real World Brooklyn is the # 1 rated series. It beats "Real Chance at Love," "Jon and Kate plus 8," "America's Best Dance Crew" and "Suite Life on Deck" ... a boatload of other worthless crap, both scripted and unscripted.
Sorry I didn't look at the viewer's live numbers and just looked at the ranking numbers and assumed it had fallen. Thanks for the heads up V.
It's great to know the ratings went up 17% and I'm glad TRW beat out Real Chance of Love.

It is great to see it go up because I really do think we have a good season on our hands and it'd be a world so cold when people want to watch Real Chance over Real World...
I just wish teh real world had the ratings as it used to... those were the good days ... Here was one of the ratings of one episode of the San Diego season...

1. Take a screen shot or "capture" of the Turner Broadcast table at Media life.
2. Crop and save the table as a .jpg using any standard image program (Picasa is Google's free one)
3. Upload it into any comment here by clicking on the small photo box just to the right...
Easy
As for the ratings, there are two significant facts to be considered in understanding RQ XIV's reported viewers:
1. The numbers you cite are from 2004, before a change took place in the way Nielsen counted viewers and reported ratings, something advertisers had demanded because they were paying too much per actual viewers. Thus, measured today, San Diego's ratings would be less.
2. The Real World Paris finale rating was 1.34 million for the 18-34 demographic. Vegas' earlier finale was 2.24 million for the 18-34 demo.
3. The latest survey reporting indicates that 20% of program viewers (heavily weighted to younger viewers) get the primetime content from their computer and not from the traditional TV -- where Nielsen doesn't measure. Thus, to compare today's numbers with those from five years ago, one needs to first, reduce the older number by 30% in the select demographic. The resulting number for comparison is 1,540,000, not the 2,200,000 reported viewers in 2004.

Its great to see the continuation of great ratings. It is valid proof that there is hope where there is emotion. Every season should have this substance.

Didn't know the ratings for San Diego was that high and it even has a higher rating than the Inferno which was a very popular show at the time.

I was just surprised that MTV had 4 of the top 5 shows and 6 on the top ten list.
I wonder if that episode of RW San Diego was the double arrest episode? Or one of the "Frankie wants to leave" episodes? I didn't really watch that season, but made sure to watch those. The previews got me.

The show ran from January 6, 2004, to June 29, 2004, but, unfortunately I can't find an episode list without the old RW threads from Tubescan.
MTV and Bunim-Murray Productions announced today that the 22nd season of The Real World will begin production in Cancun, Mexico Q1 '09. The upcoming season of the popular reality-based series is slated for premiere later this year, this time sending eight strangers to the sandy beaches of the Caribbean Sea.
Throughout the 21 seasons of the series, The Real World has been one of the highest rated shows on MTV. The current season of The Real World premiered on January 7, 2009 to a phenomenal viewership by posting a 2.3 rating among P12-34 and ranked #1 for the day against all cable competition.
The Real World launched the modern reality television genre and is the longest-running reality series in history. Past seasons have taken place in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii, New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, Paris, San Diego, Philadelphia, Austin, Key West, Denver, Sydney, Hollywood, and Brooklyn. The first season, set in New York City, debuted in 1992. Each season, the show brings seven, and now eight, young strangers to live together in a new city and rolls the cameras 24-7, witnessing as their lives intersect, their ideas are challenged and their passions emerge.
The Real World was created for MTV by Jon Murray and Mary-Ellis Bunim of Bunim-Murray Productions. Jon Murray and Jim Johnston serve as Executive Producers of "The Real World: Cancun." Jacquelyn French is the MTV executive overseeing the project.
Week of January 12 sets marks. Driven by strong premieres and repeat performances for all of these shows, MTV saw its P12-34 rating for the week starting January 12, 2009, jump 11% versus the prior week and 19% from the Q4/2008 full-week average. This gave MTV its best weekly ratings since the week starting September 1, 2008, which closed with the 2008 Video Music Awards special on September 7. The Real World was the #1 cable telecast on January 14 among P12-34 for the second straight week, and was second only to American Idol across all television shows. The return of America's Best Dance Crew (1/15/2009) gave MTV its best Thursday ratings since August 2008 as the season 3 premiere of ABDC delivered a 1.98 P12-34 rating, improving the prior four week time period average by 133%.
MTV had 4 of the top 10 cable telecasts for that week among W12-34, too: The Real World, The City, America's Best Dance Crew and Daddy's Girls. Additionally, the Cribs block on 1/17/09 raised Saturday's 12PM-2PM timeslot rating by 36% over the prior four weeks. That same afternoon, MTV Cribs Celeb at 3PM delivered a 0.93 P12-34, improving the time period average by 90%.

The reunion show will be taped next month. We're not that far from the end of "Brooklyn."
THANKS!! : D and hmmm the numbers dropped :(, but its still beating Making the Band 4 so just as long as its not at the bottom of MTV's current top shows. But im sure that 1,505 million is a still a great number.

The Gettysburg episode was a bad week for RW Brooklyn. Not only did the numbers drop by 19.5 % week to week, but the potential reality audience demonstrated a clear preference for other cable reality shows.
Generally, when there is such a significant drop in ratings, one looks at fan reaction to the previous week. Since the game in the TV network board room is called "Blame Someone Else," we can look to the episode that featured Scott and his girl friends, the overplayed Devyn crush, Ryan/Chet/DJ hijink and the continuing absence of Baya. The edit didn't resonate with many fans who elected not to watch the following week. Blame is not with the cast, it rests squarely with BMP which can't figure out which story it wants to tell this season.
Viewers, once lost, are difficult to get back. It's time for MTV to FORCE BMP to change their approach to editing and re-cut next week's show and those episodes that following. The ratings are approaching a dangerous lethargy.
V1, do you know if the ratings made the top 10 for this week?
Media Life Magazine didn't report the 18-34 top rated cable shows as they normally do. Perhaps they will do so tomorrow.

And they did... RW Brooklyn is not in the 18-34 top ten for the week, but neither is any other reality show. Here are the week to week ratings.
