Overall, I thought this was a good episode. Sarah's story was sad and I really felt for her. JD on the other hand.. I don't really know about him. He's really starting to get on my nerves when he's drunk.
Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist but when I saw that her dad had tracked her down my first thought was that I hoped MTV wasn't somehow involved in him getting her contact info in order to add a layer of drama.
I actually was thinking the same thing, but I really hope that wasn't the case.
Oh, on a positive note, I loved Sarah's interaction with that little girl at the art program. The little girl seemed so happy to model the hat they made together. And the sugar cube igloo and snowman were so adorable!
While entertainment attorneys and network standards and practices people may all have a slightly different take on things, normally they agree that anyone who interacts with the cast must have an agreement on file with the production company. Thus, Sarah's father should have signed an agreement to allow his "likeness, etc" (in this case his voice) used by production for whatever purpose they chose, and without compensation.
Sometimes the agreements are signed in advance and sometimes they are signed after the fact. An oddity in one MTV contract attempts to have the cast members bind family members to being recorded or mentioned in the show, but I don't know of any legal precedent for anyone other than a parent of a minor or a legal guardian to bind another knowing person to a contract. It's the silliest contract proviso ever.
On most reality shows, when a friend, business associate or family member is provided the agreement in advance of show taping, a copy of the signed agreement is sent back to the individual with the appropriate information on how to contact the cast member he or she knows. Thus, it is entirely possible that BMP provided Sarah's father with the information on how to contact her, and unless the production person responsible for getting the agreement executed was aware of Sarah's history with her father, providing the phone number to him may have been entirely innocent. Then, again, the opposite may be true. If this were a VH1 show, I'd vote for evil intent.
An example of an after-the-fact agreement would be Reva during the Hollywood season. Following the taping of "he who shall not be named's interaction with Reav and others at the club "Sugar," a BMP production assistant approached Reva and convinced her to sign the agreement. It apparently didn't matter to BMP that Reva was under 21 at the time and drinking illegally in the club and completely incapable of giving her informed consent.
Sarah or Jim Johnson's perspective on how Sarah's father gained access to the phone number would be helpful.
I thought Devyn totally owned JD's friend (Angelique?) at the club. First, it was a bum way to try and call someone out, but Devyn did GREAT and when the other girl started singing along I was like "Aaaagh NO!".

ITA..I was like "she isn't even on key" AND she was SOoooo not cute, I think Katelynn looks way better than that big nosed chick.

Thanks for the legal insight V1man! It'd be great if someone can shed some light on what happened, it would be pretty despicable if it was intentional on the part of production.
And re: Devyn and JD's friend, it was definitely a total set up and a big time b***h move on the part of JD's friend especially. I agree that Devyn did a fantastic job especially given the situation. I liked seeing her sing the national anthem, her voice is beautiful (and I gotta say it takes a strong confident woman to be on tv rocking the rollers and face mask btw I think I'd be getting up a 4am taking out the rollers hahaha).

I thought she looked way cute in her rollers and face-mask! Get your beauty on girl.
Well it's like my mom always says "it takes a lot of work to be naturally beautiful honey!" When I saw that scene I was like now THAT'S keeping it real hahahaha.

Angelique was trying way too hard. Somebody should have reminded her it was not American Idol. JD, tsk tsk...

Right! Isn't she an AI reject?
Right! Isn't she an AI reject?
I would assume because I have never seen her...I would never say "she was on American Idol" about my friend if she neer even made it to the final 13 (or whatever number it is)
Is this the same girl that was with JD...

Just curious V1- if Sarah had a no-contact petition/EPO against her father, would BMP be held responsible for providing her information to her father? I know the laws are very different in various states and seem to be unclear.
This was probably one of the best episodes I've seen in the season so far.
I have only seen Ep 3 and 4 though so it isn't saying much LOL...
It was a very entertaining episode.

Frankly, this is an area of the law in which I have absolutely no expertise. Further, I can't speak to specific situations, but for a Delaware corporation operating in California, a Washington State court order would mean nothing. Such orders generally enjoin individuals, not corporations.
The episode was amazing. It seemed as though most people got air time.
Sarah is just an amazing person. She seems so strong and genuine and my heart goes out to her completely. She is definitely inspirational. And her interviews in the aftershow were moving.
hi everyone, i know people love to come up with their own ideas of what happened but there are many of you out there who need to know the truth so you stop assuming ..sooo to clear up things about my dad:
First off: NO ONE at MTV or Bunim/Murray gave him my number. I suspect that it was a family member of mine, but no one wants to fess up.
second: there were NUMEROUS incidents that took place, but because he was not convicted, MTV cant put it on the air due to laws against slander. SO they kept it brief and to the point, hoping that people out there would pick up on the sexual abuse undertones. (clearly some picked up on that better than others) what really happened?: He showed me and my little brothers S&M pornography when we were little kids, told us thats how beautiful women look. He stood in front of me naked and tried to get me in to bed with him.... need i go on??
and WHY ISNT HE IN JAIL you ask? well: his brother is a lawyer and his entire family in law is in the judicial system... judges, lawyers, etc... all he does is call in a favor and everything gets tossed out or we get buried in paperwork. and i was a kid, I certainly couldnt afford a lawyer and my mom is a single mom with three kids trying to make ends meet. We did our best ... but it was never good enough. which is why I went on the show: to share my story of injustice.
Last but not least: why there is no restraining order... well, thats my own fault. I have put it on my list of things to do SOOO many times, but every time, i chicken out... you have to understand that ive spent literally YEARS getting the runaround by the courts. and EVERY time that ive ever spoken to a judge or court official, they've told me that there isnt enough evidence and theres nothing i can do... and it KILLS me to hear that.. and im scared to hear it again.. but im working on it...
hopefully this answered a few questions .....

Thank you for taking the time out to post, Sarah. I was determined to read the thread in full before I asked my question because all I was thinking about when I was watching the show is "how did he get the phone number?!" I was also wondering why they didn't show more specifics of of what happened with your dad because I was pretty sure you told more of the story on camera. It sucks that people are so quick to sue one another anymore. It totally makes sense that they were covering their behinds.
Anyway... I wonder if there is going to be an upcoming episode where Katelynn confronts JD about outing her to "the mormon." I don't think JD is malicious at all. It sounds like when he was saying all that stuff about being a better transgender than Katelynn that he said it strictly to flatter his friend. I don't think he truly meant it. He was just in the moment and probably totally forgot that there was a camera rolling and was just being a drunk butt kisser. I think that he also forgot that Chet technically didn't know that Katelynn is TG. Ryan suspected it early on and shared it with Chet. I think the reason Chet was so "cool" with it is because he wasn't surprised since it had been previously discussed.
The fact remains, however, that JD needs to take responsibility for his actions when he's been drinking and realize that there may be repercussions. Did he not realize how sensitive of an issue being TG is to Katelynn? That's just something that he should've avoided talking about even with the people that Katelynn had already come out to. I really don't want to say much more because of the editing issues and I will probably just end up putting my foot in my mouth. I hope JD takes the time to come and speak up for himself here.

Welcome Sarah and thanks for posting that!
Your dad seems like a stalker. He just keeps calling. Hopefully in the future you'll be able to get him out of your life.
All the best!
Thanks for clearing that up Sarah, I'm relieved that production wouldn't stoop that low. Even though they didn't get into a lot of detail on the show I think it was obvious that there was a lot more to the story than what they showed and you're such an amazing woman for coming forward and talking about something that far too many people live with. I hope that for peace of mind's sake you are able to get him to leave you alone.
Btw the pictures with you and your fella are beautiful, you look so gorgeous and you two look very much in love and very happy.

aww you two are so cute! That's so cool to hear that you two are still together and going stronger. Good to know you did not get naughty while you were in NYC :D.
But i do must ask, because you did "come out" and did tell your mom that you were into girls... how was the transition when you first met your guy? And how did that thing work? Were you two friends at first and somehow he got you interested or did you just find something appealing about him from the first time? And by transition i mean... with all that has happened in your life, was it hard to trust this new man and etc. The beginning of course, since now it is most likely dandy and very good :)
