Dexter: Season 3 - Episode Discussion
I just finished watching the premiere of Dexter and much like last season the first episode did not impress nor dissuade. As always, the table had to be set for the coming year with the new characters introduced and the base crime that will drive the storyline unveiled. I have a feeling next week is going to be much better (and the week after that even better) as this is a show that always builds toward the finale. I wasn't knocked out of my chair, but no premiere this season has manged to do that yet.
I am almost ready to watch the premiere. Hopefully I will be back soon to discuss my thoughts. (going to watch Episode 9 of Season 2 in a few minutes :D)
I'm finally all caught up. Kind of bittersweet. I was getting used to spending so much time on Dexter, now I have to wait for a weekly installment again. bummer. I can't believe that Rita is pregnant! How awesome is that? One thing I noticed is that they don't show nude scenes of Julie Benz. Not that I want to see her *******, I just think it's a bit odd when they showed Jaime Murray at every opportunity.

I was getting used to spending so much time on Dexter, now I have to wait for a weekly installment again. bummer.
That was how I felt after the first season as I watched it the week of the season 2 premiere. It was weird having to all of a sudden wait for the next episode.
I can't believe that Rita is pregnant! How awesome is that?
I am excited for her and I am very interested to see how Dexter reacts. It was one thing to get caught and go to prison, leaving a surrogate family in the lurch - but if he has his own kid will this change him? Will he have to give his grisly hobby up? (Well, I don't think he will, but it does raise some interesting questions.)
One thing I noticed is that they don't show nude scenes of Julie Benz. Not that I want to see her *******, I just think it's a bit odd when they showed Jaime Murray at every opportunity.
You want to see more Julie Benz nude? ME TOO! :D
I recall saying that I did not want to see her nude. I was just commenting on that they don't show her. ;) What the heck has happened to our mousy Rita? My husband noticed it too while we were watching season 2. She's certainly grown as an independent woman. Tonight was just another step in that direction. Good for her. I'm sure that Dexter will continue to grapple with impending fatherhood whether he wants it or not. But he loves Rita and the kids so I think he'll probably pretend to want the baby. It seems to be a continuing trend that Dexter is just getting sloppier and sloppier. It keeps things suspenseful but at the same time I shake my head and say dude! get your *** together, you need to be more careful! lol Think Deb will turn rat???
Rita has changed and I say good for her. I was glad she decided to keep the child although this is going to leave a lot of thinking on Dexter's part. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if something "happens" though along the way as I am not sure Dexter having a child would work for the script in the long run. As for Deb, I don't think she will rat per say but rather have her hand forced as she finds out more about the guy IA is after. You could tell he was acting sketchy about his CI, so obviously the CI has some dirt. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be the main bad guy this season. The last 5 minutes of this episode really got things rolling. I got that "butterfly feeling" I sometimes get when I fear for Dexter. It is starting to get good!
Somehow I really didn't think that Dexter was going to come around quite so quickly. But when you are dealing with a short season I guess things have to move a bit faster. I wonder how Dexter is going to handle his new best friend. You know he is going to continue to get in his way and eventually he will have to do something. I think Miguel is going to unravel quickly professionally and Dexter will use it against him.
I think Miguel is going to unravel quickly professionally and Dexter will use it against him.
Oh, you know that bloody shirt is going to come into play at one point. Also, with that last kill Dexter strayed further from the code and we all remember what happened to Sgt. Doakes (even though Dexter did not pull the figurative trigger) - so there is no telling what lengths Dex will go to at this point to protect himself and his new family. With a child on the way, jail is not an option. Miguel probably calls in the anonymous tip on the grave, starting a series of events that reveals the real Dexter to him, causing the need for his demise. I have a feeling this is going to be a single season endeavor for Jimmy Smits. ;)
I have a feeling this is going to be a single season endeavor for Jimmy Smits. ;)
I hope so. I'm not so big on the Smits. Never was.
I hope so. I'm not so big on the Smits. Never was.
He always seems to be overreaching. In the last three roles I can remember him in (West Wing, Cane and Dexter) he seemingly plays an actor that is working too hard to deliver his lines...
I finally caught up with last week's episode of Dexter. It was a bit slow and not much really happened. There was a lot of character base laying with Quinn and Ramone (along with a sizable Rita/marriage angle.) There have to be "informational episodes" now and again to set up the big reveals. I am still going with Quinn as the serial killer this season (and I am also guessing Ramone eventually ends up dead.) On a positive note, tonight's preview looked really good!
Tonights episode was AWESOME!!!!! I love the potential new friendship between Dexter and Miguel!
I just finished watching it for the second time. My hope is that Dexter wakes up and realizes that Miguel is not good for him. It's making him sloppy and veering off his course. On the one hand it is a convenient friendship and Dexter can claim that Miguel turned him into this monster if he should ever get caught. This plot line needs to pick up pace. In season 2 we were knee deep in plot thickness by this point.
I'm not sure if it is me or if I am really not enjoying this season because it's not that great. But it's probably neither and I'm just letting my illogical hate of Jimmy Smits cloud my judgment. I want to shake Dexter. WTF are you thinking dude! Miguel is not your friend. OMG Dex is going to get caught. Also, the skinner...my husband thinks it's the new detective, but I just think that's too handy. Then again so is Ramon. hmmm. I kind of like the new detective and think that would be a good hook-up for Deb. About Dexter and Miguel's little partnership, I am thoroughly confused. He obviously set Dex up with this kill by eliminating a threat to his family, but how is that possible when Dex said he'd been waiting 10 years to do this guy???? It doesn't compute for me, but I must have missed something. Dex is pretty thorough, you'd think he'd know what the guy looked like. But the dude seemed genuine when he uttered you have the wrong guy just as Dexter gagged him.
I'm not sure if it is me or if I am really not enjoying this season because it's not that great.
I am two weeks behind now.... I guess that tells the story of where I am in regards to this season.
I am going to be 4 weeks behind after tonight. Is the story turning? Is it getting better?
The tide finally turned tonight. All I can say is finally! It just sucks because I know we are reaching the finale.
Bacchus! You need to catch up! I don't know how Dex is going to get out of this one!
Ugh - I am too far behind! I think this is going to be a summer DVD thing for me. :(
awww, you suck! ;) Who am I going to talk to?
This season has me on the edge of my seat!!!
Who am I going to talk to?
I did a mini marathon and I am through [strike]episode 7[/strike] [strike]episode 8[/strike] [strike]episode 9[/strike] [strike]episode 10[/strike] episode 11.
I'm all caught up. It was good, but not season 1 - season 2 caliber. Still, it is one of the better shows on television. There are a lot of things to tie up so I am looking forward to seeing how they do it. We have Quinn who is still a bit sketchy. The Skinner on the loose. Ramone's Brother looking for revenge and The Lieutenant is going to be wondering what happened and she is no idiot. Not to mention there has to be a wedding!
Hey that's not a video! It's a poker download. :( What's up?
Hey that's not a video! It's a poker download. :( What's up?
Weird, it is a trailer for the Dexter finale for me. Could be your Canadian IP is making it serve different content. Well, you don't need to watch it anyway. It is on in less than an hour. :D
grrrrrr, I really hate the US rules! Makes no freakin' sense. I actually have to leave Survivor to watch Dexter .... but I'll continue watching Survivor when it re-airs on the west coast. I agree though about this season, not the stuff that made Season 1 or 2. Personally Season 2 is the best for me.
Ok, not sure what to say. I was let down. I was waiting for Rita to catch a bullet or something to spice up the finale, but no such luck (I know, that is mean. I like Rita, I do.) It was just bland. Like any other episode. Nothing special. I hope they bring a little of the season 1 & 2 magic back for season 4.
Let that be a lesson to any show, it's never a good idea to add Jimmy Smits to your show. At least Dexter didn't get the ax like the West Wing. I liked the happy ending. Every serial killer needs his happily ever after moment. But yeah, this season wasn't very exciting.
