Firefox 3: A Better Web Experience - Reasons to Switch
I mentioned earlier that I set up some new tracking software for the forum just to get a better idea of what type of trends were developing on Vevmo over time. Well lo and behold, very bad news right off the bat! 99% of people here and not using the latest version of firefox! Most are using Internet Exploder while there is a handful of others using older versions of Firefox (going back to 1.5) and Safari. Time to wake up and jump on the bandwagon as I have no idea what this site even looks like in Internet Exploder, Surfing Safari or DinoFox! (Ok...that is a lie, but I avoid the bad, the bubbly and the old like the plague.) That being said, I guess it is time to lay out a few reasons for making the switch (or upgrade) via lifehacker: 1. It's free. Completely, utterly free. You don't have to pay a penny to download it. Firefox is a product of the Mozilla foundation, a tax exempt non-profit foundation, which was established to create innovative open-source software. Mozilla is completely funded by donations. So if you like Firefox—and I bet you will—consider throwing a few dollars in their direction. 2. It runs on everything. Windows? Yes. Macs? Yes. Linux? Yes. You've got a recent computer? Firefox will almost certainly run on it. 3. It's small. It takes up very little disk space, so it's a quick, simple download. Unlike certain other browsers, it's not a bloated dinosaur. 4. It's expandable. You can add almost any functionality you want via plug-ins. There's a huge community of Firefox developers out there offering nifty software extensions that you just plug into your browser. You can remove Google spam. You can adjust the way your fonts are shown. You can watch the current weather forecast. Firefox's extensions manager lets you see what items you've installed and you can remove them with just a few clicks. 5. It's secure. Firefox doesn't run ActiveX components or VB script. This makes it far less vulnerable to malicious hacking than Explorer. Also, it's been tightly coded, meaning fewer vulnerabilities to attack. Want more security? Consider adding a JavaScript monitoring extension. 6. Switching is easy. Firefox is smart enough to help you transfer your existing bookmarks, cookies and other settings from your current browser when you install. 7. It's skinnable. Firefox's look and feel is completely customizable. Use the Themes Manager to download and manage any of hundreds of skins. 8. Google is built-in. You don't have to waste your homepage on Google, when you can search directly from the Firefox control bar. Go ahead and pick a home page you really like. Personally? I recommend Vevmo.com. 9. It's well respected. Firefox has been named PC World's Product of the Year, Softpedia's User's Choice, Forbes' Best of the Web, SC Magazine's "Editor in Chief" award, CNET Editor's Choice, Laptop Magazine Editor's Choice, PC-Welt's Readers Choice Best Internet Tool, and more. They all like it. Won't you? 10. It's got tabs. If you've ever dealt with a gadzillion open Explorer windows at once, you'll know what I mean when I say that organizing your Web tasks and windows is a critical path for getting work done. Firefox's tabbed interface allows you to collapse all those windows onto a single screen and move quickly (and easily) back and forth between your different Web site "worlds". One site still downloading? Just tab on over to another in the meantime. It works beautifully, compactly and neatly. Those sound like good reasons to me! Make the switch. Free your mind and your computer! Download it now! <code> </code><code class="html"></code> br /&gt; src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"&gt;
I'm planning to upgrade to Firefox 3 this weekend!
I'm planning to upgrade to Firefox 3 this weekend!
Why the wait? Not like it is surgery, lol. Still, I guess the fact that you are indeed updating is worth something. My goal is to have 50% of people on Vevmo using firefox. ;)
yessss its DLing. Yanno...i must say, i need to get more add-ons for it. i only have the download helper Bacchus...kind sir. please recommend some!
I run with all sorts of addons, but many are developer type things. Here is a quick 5 to get started. 1. Adblock Plus (Not to be used on vevmo mind you! lol) 2. FireGestures 3. GMAIL Manager 4. DownloadThemAll! 5. Fliterset.G Updater Oh and maybe sweet mac skin. Actually I better explain. 1. Gets rid of all ads 2. Allows you to do keyboard things with the mouse (like right click move left goes back a page, etc) 3. Lets you manage gmail accounts via firefox. Gives you email alerts, et al. 4. Lets you download every object on a page of whatever type you choose (i.e. pictures, movies, mp3's) and puts them all in a folder you specify. This is great for...er...well...moving on! 5. Updates Adblock to get the latest ad spam out there.

Well I have now upgraded to FireFox 3 and I have to say I'm liking it in the 30 seconds I've had it lol
hey bacchus, i want to know if you get anything out of recommending firefox 3 to us... not like money from them or anything but how does it benefit you/this site?
hey bacchus, i want to know if you get anything out of recommending firefox 3 to us... not like money from them or anything but how does it benefit you/this site?
Nah, I am just a snob when it comes to browsers. I know, sad. I guess it would make life a little easier as I'd know that people were seeing things as I saw them (which they should in more than just this regard!) ....but hey, keep using Firefox 2, KT, and see if I care!

KT you're crazy
haha, you know whats sad, the fact that you went to look up what i use so you could insult me...
Look it up? Wasn't it blatantly obvious that you were projecting an, "I'm better than IE 7, I have no idea what Opera 9.5 is, but I'm not bleeding edge enough to be an FF3 early adopter?" kind of vibe? Geez, I thought it was...
and everyone agrees with you bacchus. youre the all-knowing, all-mighty, all-powerful vevmo god. we wouldn't dare disagree with you.
Wow. Bravo. I couldn't have said it better!
and just to clarify, by "we" i do not mean white people... (haha sorry, but i just made myself laugh for a ridiculous amount of time)
Stay away from ambien. I'm serious!
p.s. that's killer to you bacch-y... and you better be careful, that nick-name doesnt come from no where. c-murder is my other nickname in case you didnt notice or didnt remember...
Careful? I think the tables might be turned my dear. The open access to your facebook that you have provided looks to offer enough stock photography to keep my "photoshop blackmail machine" turning for quite some time! :D
Stay away from ambien. I'm serious!
i have no idea what you mean by this... ambien is a sleep aide right? please explain
Careful?
can you tell me if i'm using firefox 3 now?
**Shakes magic 8 ball ** No, you're not. :( It is possible that you ran the installer, but are using a shortcut from the old firefox (2.0.0.14) to launch the browser. I am quite sure they exist as separate yet distinct programs. Try finding it from your XP start menu and see if there are two instances of firefox.
also, what the hell is opera 9.5?
Opera 9.5 Another browser that is popular in some circles.
i have no idea what you mean by this... ambien is a sleep aide right? please explain
Ambien can have unwanted side effects.
haha thats funny that you say that... before i added you i went and deleted some pictures i didnt want you to have access to haha.
Ambien can have unwanted side effects.
i still have no idea what that has to do with me laughing about my joke... oh well, like i said to you earlier... out of the loop.
i still have no idea what that has to do with me laughing about my joke... oh well, like i said to you earlier... out of the loop.
Can't we all just get along? :drinks:
dang, i didn't even know v3 was out. thanks man. i've updated noscript is one of my favorite add-ons. it blocks all automatic scripts (including ads &amp; java stuff) &amp; you can choose to allows script to run from certain sites either for a session or permanently.
How come it FF3 won't delete my browsing history even though I've cleared all my private data? I still have sites that drop down and shit from my browser.....B-man? I've cleared private data like 9 times
(Even if I DO miss my back and forward arrows...)
That is why you need firegestures! ....ummm, but aren't the back and forward arrows just all the way to the top left?
