Yeah well, they keep showing boring episodes with pointless drama like the first episode and the ratings will be down all season long. I too hope the ratings did good last night , of course.
I'm sure next week will have higher ratings. This week being the premiere will probably act as some sort of a "warm up" for the rest of the season. I know premieres are supposed to be huge, but I feel the ratings going up.
The only problem comparing this to Jersey Shore/Teen Mom is that with JS being in it's prime and season 2, and with all the marketing, promotion, and advertising it had, it skyrockets. There was an article last week about it getting 6.7 million viewers and a 3.4 for 18-49. I mean, can anybody even say the word "situation" without thinking of JS? lol
A lot of people (in this forum and the people I'm around) always compare The Real World / Challenge's ratings to JS' ratings. And while JS has a huge fanbase, it's just a fad. In two years or less people can say the word Situation without thinking of a 30 y.o. Italian guy.
While the last Real World averaged around 2 million viewers, and JS about 6.7 or whatever, The Real World has been around since 1992. Obviously BMP is doing something right. I doubt The Real World and the Challenge will be cancelled with an average of 2 mil viewers. MTV has to show something when JS isn't on right? Besides, they're bringing RJ Berger back so why not keep the mother of Reality TV alive?

QFT! It's not going anywhere
Comparing it to Fresh Meat 2, which aired in a different season, is not really relevant. Compare it to the Ruins instead.
Compared to the Ruins premiere:
Up a few percent in total viewers
Up .1 in Ratings points (HH)
Down .1 in A18-49
Not great. Not awful. If the higher-ups at MTV really want to keep The Challenge around a few more years, numbers like this are probably good enough to support that case. If they really want to get rid of it, numbers like this can support that notion too.
Nobody said the RW or challenges were gonna get taken off because of Jersey Shore, while I disagree that it'll all be over within 2 years (half of them are signing for their own shows/writing books), I remember reading an article where someone from MTV talked about how JS was created because of the RW to take on a less serious way of viewing the lives of 8 strangers. God only know how many people I know who live for the shore and have no idea where the RW has filmed in the past 5 years.

If I may grandstand for a second, I think JS gets way more viewers because its a much better directed and produced show. Not in terms of production values - ****, JS doesn't even come in in HD for me (no idea why) and the ever-present distressed filter makes me seasick. But in terms of story-building through editing, music, and a mix of drama and humor its outstanding. Additionally, the stories are short, usually only parts of 1-2 segments each. Its total ADHD television. Every time I watch JS it reminds me of the Austin season - the last time I felt RW really nailed it. The **** they Should have Shown? On JS they just show it the first time.
I still think the biggest mistake BMP made with RW and the Challenges was moving from 30 minutes to 60. Even back to back 30 minute episodes would be better than these 1 hour messes that feel 20 minutes too long.
I agree with you about hour long episodes. Although, I think works well for challenges, but not Real World. At the end of a Real World season I feel like I'm just starting to get to know the cast and then it's over. Plus, usually about half the episode is boring stuff that is just there to fill time...
when the challenge is condensed to 30 minutes but with like 17 episodes, it's honestly more entertaining and my help ratings. An hour is too long and can get boring. It drags on, but with 30 minutes, the editing is better because they have to show a lot in a short amount of time.
Idk, I think challenges are better with an hour episode. With the older seasons 30 mins weren't enough for me. That's why I could never watch the first Fresh Meat, it was like an ADD editor popping from one thing to another and its hard to get connected. An hour long challenge is great because you get to see some of the drama in the house, view a nice detailed mission, listen to arguments in deliberations and see someone go home at the end of the episode.
The Real World isn't great for a whole hour because a lot of story lines are completely lost. Back in Denver there wasn't an "invisible" cast member because almost everyone had a dominate episode. They should have two back to back 30 min episodes on Wednesday nights, or edit the footages to make it look like two different episodes instead of one storyline going on forever.
I like the hour long format for Challenges too. Having to wait another week for the elimination round really annoyed me. I want to see the challenge, some hang out time and the elimination round all at once.

I agree. And with the hour long format they show more of the actual challenge and don't skip certain parts of it. With a half our it's like "Ok, go!" ::watch one team do some, watch another team do some, watch the last team do some:: then the horn blows and the winnign team celebrates.
And I definitely like people getting eliminated every episode. Screw the whole "To be continued...." bs lol.
It's only week to there is way more room for improvement.
if it as .1 o .2 difference I'd agree..but its a .5 difference, thats pretty big.
Wow that's awful -_-.
I really think the pointless fighting affects the show, but ya can't blame 'em since they're trapped in the house and have nothing to do. BMP let these kids out and have fun, like Abram mentioned! Let them go clubbing and out to bars on the weekend like they used to and get their frustration out.

You have to look at more than just the total number of viewers.

You'll see that next week.

Now that is where I have no clue. I need to look into how to analyze rating because I just look at total number of viewers.

Real World / Road Rules Challenge
- 1.275 million viewers
Total amount of viewers.
- 0.9/2 HH
.9% of all households in the US watched the Challenge. 2% of all households that had their TV on at that time were tuned into the Challenge.
- 0.7/2 A18-49
.7% of all 18-49 year olds in the US watched the challenge. 2% of all 18-49 year olds in the US that had their TV on were tuned into the Challenge.
W means women.
Companies gear ads towards the 18-49 demographic, so this is the one that TV programs try to do well in.
MTV is having a lot of success with Teen Mom and Jersey Shore. Not so much with the RW franchise. Wonder what they are going to do with the franchise when their other nights are successful.
