Hi

Here

Here!

Hello everyone and welcome to your first Driver’s Seat Ceremony on this season of…

Today we will be talking about The Black Lives Matter Movement along with several other movements that have been created in recent years with ongoing race relation tensions. We will discuss their impact, their notable work, and controversies. I will serve as your moderator and if I feel that answers to questions are becoming too repetitive, off topic, or behavior is becoming uncalled for we will move on to the next question. If your behavior is becoming rude, cruel, or harmful you’ll be asked to leave today’s event. So please, lets get a quality discussion flowing but do it in a non-hurtful or harmful way.

Before we get started I’ll present some facts from both sides of the issue for everyone to review and decipher in their own terms.

Fact 1) The Black Lives Matter Movement was created by three African American women as a call to action after the Trayvon Martin shooting. Since that shooting, several other African Americans have been shot dead by police and anti-black racists.

Fact 2) The #BlueLivesMatter movement was created after the B.L.M movement started and was a response to show support to police officers being targeted for racism.

Fact 3) NFL Football player Colin Kaepernick received both criticism and praise in 2016 for refusing to stand during the National Anthem because he did not support how blacks were treated in the United States.

Fact 4) Critics argue that the All Lives Matter movement + Blue Lives Matter movement takes issue away from several clear cases of racism against African Americans. Those opposing movements respond with they think everyone’s live is important not just one race.

Fact 5) Multiple peaceful protests with the BLM Movement have been shut down by cops. There have been violent protests by supporters of the BLM movement however the organization as a whole condemns those who become violent and support peace. This violence though has caused the credibility of the movement to be called into question.

What are your first thoughts after reading through the facts presented?

I think the Black Lives Matter was started with a good cause and the overall concept of it is a good one and I agree with. What I don't agree with is people using the movement as an excuse to then go kill cops or other people. Unfortunately, a few bad eggs causes some people to look at the movement differently.

I understand the purpose of the blue lives matter, but feel like it may be taken too extreme and maybe was not needed as much even though I agree with supporting cops. However, I fully awknowledge that there are defintitely a ton of crooked cops

As for Colin, I disagree with him sitting for national anthem. I think he needs to find the balance between his political statements and being a football player

Well i guess I can start lol.

What kapernick was doing was not a stand against black lives. It was during the national anthem which is supposed to show support for his country protesting showed her does support or care about america

I am for BLM - the movement was something that was needed for a while now. It's sickening to see cops have the mentality of 'shoot first, ask later' and that they think they're above the law. What happened to serve and protect? Should skin color play a factor into which life you'll protect?

I was starting my senior year when Ferguson occurred, and my one friend had a great quote regarding the movement: "It's not to say that all lives matter, but understand what this is for...why they are out there, why we need to have our voices heard." I agree wholeheartedly - black lives don't matter more than everyone else, but they should be treated equally.

Not a lot of thoughts tbh, except that it reaffirms my opinion that the BLM movement has a true purpose.

I guess I'll start.. I think BLM has been a great idea with great intentions thus far..

I don't think people who truly understand what BLM is supposed to stand for agrees with those who have shot cops in the name of BLM.. those people were clearly off base.

I ain't American so the National Anthem dilemma means very little. I understand why he did it.

It also boils my blood when I hear people say "all lives matter" - people like this are completely missing the point of BLM.

As personally knowing a cop who has died while trying to save and protecting the community I disagree why should people need to go to work and worry about getting shot and killed when I cop signs up one of the first things they are required to do is make funeral arrangements f someththing were to happen

Do you think he is disrespecting the country by not standing?

i was at a rally for gary johnson and i think he put it great, he said something along the lines of "it's obvious that all lives matter but right now that's not the point. black lives matter because white people are not the ones that have to worry about being gunned down walking down the street. they're not being locked up and murdered at alarming rate" he said something along those lines

Do you support the Black Lives Matter movement, All Lives Matter movement, both, or none?

I have also known of white people getting shot. What about the BLM protests were people are burning down there own community it happened in ferguson
