When inserting a link how is it that you cover the link with words?

1. Write the words.
2. Highlight them.
3. Click the link button (the little globe and chain.)
4. Paste in the URL (link) in the pop-up box.
5. Done!

I was wondering how the standings(?) work (I don't know what else to call it). You know how some people have "apprentice" under their screen name and some people have "member" and so on and so forth. I'm sorry if this is obvious or has been answered previously; it just always kind of confused me how it worked.
