Lost: Ep. 406 - The Other Woman

Lost

I look forward to each installment of Lost with such anticipation and fury that even the slightest letdown of an episode can leave a huge gaping hole in my television viewing spirit. This week’s Juliet centric episode was for me a wash on multiple levels and left me feeling a bit down and quite impatient as we begin the slow crawl forward to this season’s finale.

The moment I realized it was a flash back rather than a flash forward, I began to slump in my chair. A dreaded retread. Now that we are time traveling viewers on the cusp of finding out the greatest of secrets, it was immediately disappointing to know that this entire episode would be about the past. We already had a Juliet flashback episode last year, and although that one played meaningfully into the story, this one felt more like stalling then a positive foray into character development. The entire sub plot could have been summarized with a simple, “Ben is in love with me and thinks he owns me; I slept with Goodwin and his wife Harper (ghost?) is now stalking me in the jungle” from Juliet. Instead, we waste precious minutes of the dwindling Lost timeline finding out about Ben’s quasi obsession, Goodwin cheating on his crazy psychotherapist wife Harper and a new contrived Dharma outpost.

The Tempest “real-time” portion of the episode was completely anticlimactic and put me to sleep in the “Lost van” while the driver asked for directions. The story device guided us to think that Dan and Charlotte were going to kill everyone on the island with the toxic gas from the station. Juliet comes to save the day, the clock ticks down, and *wait for it* *wait for it* they are actually trying to help the survivors and neutralize the gas (which they accomplish with mere seconds remaining on the foreboding apocalypse timer.) Oh how lucky we are! Everyone could have died and the show would have ended…

Obviously, I am quite cynical when it comes to my favorite series and I hate sitting through an entire hour for naught. The big reveal of Widmore being the evil megalomaniac bad guy controlling the ship did little to shock me and the ending which included Sawyer and Hurley seeing Ben free roaming the Others compound was a complete thrilless shill. Probably the least thought provoking ending in quite some time.

The attempt at substance fell short. I assume that the entire scene with the secret documents and video from the safe was supposed to enlighten and intrigue us. To tell the truth, I begin to tune out the second Locke starts talking to Ben as I know it is a meaningless circle jerk. Who cares about Widmore! What is the smoke monster? Who is Jacob? Where is this island? When is this island? WHAT IS THIS ISLAND? Can you just get to the damn point?

Next week is supposed to be “huge” according to the actors (per Wikipedia) so I still hold out hope that the Producers can right the ship - although I only have so much patience.

“Ji Yeon" is the seventh episode of ABC's fourth season of Lost and seventy-sixth episode overall. The characters of Sun (played by Yunjin Kim) and Jin Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim) are featured in the episode's off-island storyline. The actors of Lost have called the "Ji Yeon" the most shocking of the first seven episodes. The episode was filmed in late October and early November of 2007. In the episode, Juliet is forced to reveal some startling news to Jin when Sun threatens to move to Locke’s camp. Meanwhile, Sayid and Desmond begin to get an idea of the freighter crew’s mission when they meet the ship’s Captain.
What could the startling news be? That pregnant women die on the island? ZOMG!

*Sigh*

BTW: Did anyone find it strange that Jack did not further question Juliet about the disappearing person (Harper) in the jungle? I for one would have been quite sure to ask a few follow up questions if someone just evaporated in front of me....

Re: Lost: Ep. 206 - The Other Woman

I have to admit I was a bit pulled in by Juliet's story. Although by the end of it I was left scratching my head wondering why it took a whole hour to tell it.

I was even more disappointed in Jack for kissing her...knowing that Kate didn't stay in the compound because of Sawyer and that she came back!!!!!

But I concur with most of your thoughts. Seemed like a wasted episode on reveals that most of us with brains had already figured out.

And you know that Ben told Locke that his man on the freighter was Michael. So that's another thing that won't be a big reveal.

I'm hoping that next week we learn what Juliet knows about Sun's pregnancy. I really think that she is exempt from the others curse, but we will see.

I don't think that Sun is immune. It just so happens that next week's episode is about her and also when the final member of the Oceanic 6 is revealed. I think that is the "surprise" in a nutshell (along with *gasp* the Michael shocker.)

I am always interested in a Juliet storyline as she is a stunning intelligent woman, but the episode as a whole felt like it was treading water. Also, the kiss with Jack was a waste as we know in the future he wants Kate anyways!
