I'll admit that when I converse with him on facebook, he seems half decent. Quite different from his reality persona. Of course, I seem half decent on the internet too, so that isn't saying much.

No, not in my experience.

Just look at the things people write about the differences they see between an edited and unedited show. RW and challenge reunion shows are good examples. Any number of different characteristics and events can be highlighted in an edited show to make a person look a particular way, yet when they are recorded live with minimal follow-up editing, then more of their personality emerges.

I'm guessing that previous comments about CT bring out your question. My observation regarding him is that one-on-one he is fine, but when he is "on," in any setting, the darker, desiring to dominate, side of his personality emerges. Over time, it will either land him in a lot of trouble or he will learn to control that part of himself. With him, I don't think it has much at all to do with the presence of a TV camera. I've seen him behave the same arrogant, aggressive way in a hotel lobby. (Of course, he was either high at the time or had just eaten a powdered sugar doughnut.)

ok yea you have a good point there. I know the editing has a lot to do with it. But do you think the cast on TV try to portray themselves in a diff way despite the fact they know their footage will be altered or edited?

Sure, people try to fight production, but in the end, most fail. The best analogy I can make is to quote William Greener, an iconic figure in the PR world. He once wrote about the folly of fighting against a newspaper. He said, " You can't fight someone who buys ink by the barrel." Production casts most of their major cast members to fit a particular character in their notional storyline.

For example, during Gauntlet 2 Beth was portrayed as "Fat Beth" even though she is a size six (Men: the average woman's dress size in America is 14!) During both OTF and post-gauntlet day interviews, production coached cast members with questions about Beth's size. Most of what Beth said in response, or what other cast members said who disagreed with this approach was left on the cutting room floor. The most common thing Beth heard on the street when the show aired was "Hey, you look great. You've lost (so much) weight!" Her response, "It's TV. I've gained 5 pounds since the show taped last summer."
